I've found its changed as I have. I used to read a lot of fantasy but it has to be something special to make me read a fantasy book now, instead I'm reading a lot of post-apocalyptic. I like something that presents different coping mechanisms in situations and something that makes me question how I would react in the same situation. Never been a fan of romance though, but that's the answer to a different question.
Fantasy and Sci-Fi were the only types of books that interested me when I was younger. As I've grown more serious about writing I've definitely broaden my horizons, but I'd still say fantasy.
Interesting that if you look at SF/F together you've got half of the respondents, and then if you add horror you're getting up closer to 60%. I thought Crime/Thriller and Romance both outsold SF/F, and if so it is interesting that our own snapshot of what writers are producing doesn't reflect that.
Another Sci-fi/Fantasy here! Just do improve your statistics a bit, @Steerpike I also love historical fiction, like Emperor.
Apparently I had already voted, so I guess nothing has changed... And, btw, what do you mean by "blow the math"?
I read mostly science fiction because it's what I grew up reading. I think I should branch out a bit and maybe read some good fantasy books since that's the most popular choice in the poll.
Oh. Just noticed a typo in my post! It was meant to say "Just to improve your statistics a bit"... So nothing wrong anywhere!
It's a toss up between Fantasy, Horror and Western for me. Probably why I like Stephen King's Dark Tower series so much, since it combines all three. I'd probably have to say Fantasy overall though.
i like horror and fantasy books.now reading evansing. must read to get unexpected surprises. Irish Novel Historical Fantasy Books mentor book
Science fiction mostly. I also really love some fantasy--especially when there are dragons and the dragons are more than savage beasts.
I've started getting a little into Science Fiction but my roots lie in Epic Fantasy. And not just Epic, but all varieties of Fantasy (I don't like to put several books under one genre. They each have their own genre in my mind).
I love to read the fantasy genre. I like adventures and love to follow the hero through his or her quest. My second favorite genre to read is science fiction.
It seems that those two usually comes together. Almost everyone I know who loves fantasy also loves sci-fi.
Sci Fi, fantasy (mostly Sword and Sorcery kind, and I'm not sure where Warhammer 40K falls), some horror, and action/adventure in the style of Matt Helm and Alistair Maclean. Started my reading with Andre Norton, Poul Anderson, Kieth Laumer and the like, plus ERB Mars series and Tarzan. Then I found A Man And A Maid, Sadopaideia, The Pearl, F.E. Campbell etc, and added SM erotica to my list.
I'd count it as science fiction, since it takes place in a far future and involves multiple planets/solar systems and their respective races rather than sorcery and "classic fantasy beings" (trolls, elves, etc.). Then, of course, I might be wrong. I have never really looked up the actual definitions of either genre (fantasy and sci-fi).
Historical fiction and adventure/thriller are usual hits. Classic Brit Lit, too. Not a fan of techie sci-fi stuff...it's too over my head. Some fantasy is okay but I have to be in the right mood.
I really like historical fiction and dystopic type novels. The Bloody Jack series is one of my favorites as far as history goes. It's interesting to read through the books and see just how much of it is accurate or twisted around to make the story more interesting. Dystopian novels I like because I get to sit and imagine someone else's view of the future. See how well it jives with my own y'know?
I like a lot humor in my novels, like Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett, or Piers Anthony. However, sometimes I feel like the reverse-- something serious, dark, and macabre, like George Orwell or Harlan Ellison.
