Peter Pan. He represents all imagination and adventure, and what would we fiction writers be without those two things?

Humbert Humbert from Vladimir Nabokov's famous novel Lolita is my favourite character, hands down.

First off, as the novel is meant to have been written by Humbert (not Nabokov), you could say that Humbert's diction is literary perfection. As far as his personality is concerned, I love Humbert's unreliability and the way his character changes as Lolita grows up. It's interesting to watch his mind work and to see it warped by obsession. At the same time, I love Humbert's passion and love for the girl (creepy though it may be); I think the love Humbert has for Lolita makes the novel one of the few actual love stories ever written.

I wont bother splitting characters into villains vs heroes; Humbert is no hero, but is he truly a villain?

    xx

    Honorable mentions include:
    - Severus Snape from Harry Potter
    - Alaska from John Green's Looking for Alaska
    - Uncle Screwtape from CS Lewis' The Screwtape Letters
    - José (played by Eduardo Verástegui) from the 2007 film Bella

I tend to lean toward anti-heroes/amoral characters.

    Clay - Less Than Zero

    Patrick Bateman - American Psycho

    Winston - 1984

Alex Delarge - A Clockwork Orange

Raoul Duke and Paul Kemp - Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and The Rum Diary respectively

Henry Chinaski - Any Charles Bukowski novel or story involving him, especially Ham on Rye

    Chase - The Delivery Man

    Howl - Howl's Moving Castle
The Mad Hatter - Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
    Dustfinger - Inkheart
    Will - The Ranger's Apprentice

And probably some other's I can think of.
It's sad that this list makes me seem like I read only young adult fiction. xD
