    First Attempt...

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by LaurenC, Apr 25, 2009.

Hi everyone. This whole writing thing is a fairly new venture for me. I have been focused on art (the painting and drawing kind) for years and just recently have I decided to try my hand at the art of writing. I have about 11,000 words of my first draft of my first attempt at novel. I decided to join writing forums to read others work and see how below par my writing is, while hopefully picking up some great tips and advice to strengthen my writing skills. I have read a lot of really interesting and imaginative excerpts that people have posted and there seem to be a lot of very talented writers on here. Heres to finishing those novels we have all started and helping eachother along the way!

I actually tried to delete my Indian Summer post after reading through the introductions. I decided I posted it prematurely and should read through more of the site before I submit anything for review. I have made a few reviews but being a beginning writer i'm not sure how helpful they were, ha.

Indian Summer is a time of year (particularly in the midwest i think) when the summer stretches into fall and the weather remains beautiful well into October and November. My story takes place on a Michigan Campground and the survival of one of the main characters depends on the duration of the summer months. He is a runaway and once winter hits he won't be able to survive in the woods and will have to return home. It is just a working title and might need to be changed but I thought it captured the setting.

Hello Lauren, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

You did post a bit prematurely, but two of your critiques did show adequate effort. As you stick with it, you'll get even better at critiquing.

Posting your own work still should not be among the very first things you do here, though. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
