    Hello, fellow forumites.

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Thanshin, Jun 1, 2010.

    Hi WF,

You're still one more forum to lurk, one more collective mind to poke, prod and inquire; but I hope you'll soon become a friend.

English isn't my first language and I've never tried to Write something in the web language. I suppose that will be a permanent barrier to parts of this forum, but I hope I'll find the words to discuss the subtler arts of transmitting a thought.

And now that I've presented myself, it's time to lurk and learn. Let's see how you work, what you collectively believe, which of my questions you're tired of answering and which ones may light a spark of interest.

    Hi there Thanshin!

RPG section is one of the most interesting forums considering their ability to let you drown in your character. Enjoy making your fictional character adventure with other characters. Your character could be anything from (Harry Potter, Eragon)(I don't mean to say these are the best books, I am just saying if you like a book you can role-play as a char) and all the great heroes in books to your own custom character or even you or from your book!

Hello Thanshin, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Please read How to Use the Review Room before you post there. Posting your own writing for people to comment on should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

Also, be aware that posting a piece of writing on any public site, including this one, will greatly diminish your chances of selling it for publication. Removing the writing later does not alter that fact - once posted, it is irreversibly considered published. So do not post anything more than a small excerpt of any piece you are planning to submit for publication.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). Also, please use the same thread for all revisions and additional excerpts from the same piece of writing. See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out the RPG forum for improvisational fiction. Also try our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

I don't plan on submitting anything for review (among other things, because it wouldn't be in english) but I wouldn't mind reviewing if it helps someone.

Some little questions about the reviews:
    - How much skill is expected from the reviewers?
    - Does it have to be a detailer review? Or an additional post with just something like "The second paragraph is too slow, I'd move the description of the street to a previous point and leave just a small reference in this paragraph."

However, I think I'm not following my own advice of first lurking, so I'll go there and try to find the answers. ;)

Say what your heart feels. But be a little detailed like what parts you did not understand etc.?

We would love to see you at the RPG Forums.

I don't think you'll have to worry much about not knowing the language enough. You seem to speak better than a lot of people I know. :)

    Also, hello.

    Thanks for the welcome.

Just one more thing, as I feel more comfortable in this thread. Could you please see my first review to check whether it's too harsh or wrong in some way? I'd rather not ask in the review thread itself.

The skill of critiquing is what you are expected to develop. The Review Room is a critiquing workshop, to learn to critique more effectively and thereby become a better writer. The Constructive Critiques link explains what is necessary.

    Your first critique looks fine.

Ok, seven reviews in two days and enjoying every one of them.

So many different writers, so many different styles and such a chaotic intake of story bits and pieces are having a mantra chanting effect on my mind. As hours melt away and I come back from the reviewing I feel like just awake.

    Hi Thanshin,

Read some of your reviews... they are very insightful and constructive.
