    Writer's block....

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by SonnehLee, Aug 18, 2008.

...is when your characters get sick of all the crap you put them through and go on strike!

L.O.L. I totally agree, after all the characters not you create the story, only in your head.

Haha, I agree. But if we're going by that definition, imagine how much writer's block the tragedy writers must have had:

"What do you mean, you quit?" Shakespeare demanded to know.
Romeo just folded his arms and glared. "Verily, you foul undigested lump, twould be better for you to just let our beings alone!"
"Yeah," Juliet said, holding Romeo's arm, "what honey said. Leave us alone, y'big jerkwad!"

Yeah, my characters probably hate me by now. I killed four (all related), and put one in a coma.....in one story.

yeah, and then there are the fun reader's reactions. "*sniffs* I can't believe you killed her! She wasn't supposed to die!"

    "Um, yeah, actually, she was."

L.O.L. I got some of the same reactions from my cousin when she read what I have written of my story.

But since they are dead, they won't be coming after you with murderous intent. Oh, and also because they are fictional.

Be brutal to your characters, far more than you would ever be to someone you care about. Their peril, their trials, their failures as well as their hard won victories, make good fiction. The more the reader realizes, "This might not turn out well," the more fascinating the read.

Actually I find books where I think things are going fine and then SUPRISE something completly out in left feild happens. This could be because most reads I'm predicting the charicters next action before I read it. :). That's why I like SCIFI, lots of SciFi writers are really good at staying away from cliche. (The good ones at least)

After all I've done, my characters should be plotting my assassination. :p

I think mine should be too. L.O.L. I also like books with surprise twists and lots of humor and ironies.

Writers block, for me, is when my characters have their scripts in hand, but they don't like what they see:

"Excuse me, but I would never say anything like this. Who wrote this?"

"Yeah, you have me crying in four out of five scenes. Not cool."

"At least you guys have lines. All I have are reaction shots."

"Whatever, I'm over it. Where's craft services? And someone get my agent. This is the last time I do an indi."
