    Does the apostrophe mean 'of'?

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by dillseed, May 16, 2014.

I believe the apostrophe in the following means 'of.' Are they correct?

    •two weeks' vacation
    •four months' time
•two months' worth of vacation time
•two days' personal time from work
•twenty weeks' pregnancy (but: twenty weeks pregnant - no apostrophe)
    •seven nights' accommodations
    •five pennies' worth
    •a nickel's worth / two nickels' worth
    •fifty cents' worth
    •a dollar's worth / two dollars' worth

    Thank you. :)

no, that's not what it means... it's not signifying an elision, it's creating a possessive...

however, all of your examples are correct...

oh, yes, very much so!... plus, a mom of 7, grandmom of 19, great-grandma of 2 [at last count], 'by blood'... in addition to the countless mentees, clients, and others i've helped with this and that all over the world, who call me mom/mamma/mum...

    motherly hugs, m

i'm somewhat ashamed of being responsible for adding 28 more humans to the poor, over-humaned planet, but it definitely was not my intent to have that many in the first tier...

i'm going on 76 and, at least in writing and on the phone, am still taken to be decades younger... sure wish my aging bod would go along with that!:(

Seventy-six???? Damn! You're an amazing grammar teacher! I'm not being sycophantic or anything .... :)

You're as young as you feel ... and, in that case (judging from your grammatical prowess), you're in your twenties!
