    Short Story Club

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by thirdwind, Jan 28, 2013.

About a year ago, we used to have a WF Short Story Club where we would read and discuss a short story every two weeks (it varied depending on how much time people wanted to spend on a story). Unfortunately, people lost interest or were busy with other things, so we stopped. Would anyone be interested in participating? If we have enough people, I'd be more than happy to start it up and run it again. Any thoughts/questions/comments?

Would we be reading short stories that already exist, in books or online somewhere? Or would these be stories that members write for the club? Either way I'd be interested.

It'd be stories that are already published. I was thinking of limiting it to stories that can be found online for free (from a legit source). This is one way of making sure that everyone who wants to participate has easy access to the story. I realize this method excludes a lot of good stories out there, and if anyone has an alternative, I'd be glad to hear it.

I think this would be the best way. For example there are plenty of classics available for free.

What do you guys think about doing this every two weeks? Or do you think longer would be better (maybe three weeks or a month)?

I'd be up for it too. As for time scale, two weeks sounds ok :)

It's how I run the short story contest and it works there. I can't see why it wouldn't work with this.

And 16 one week. I'm happy with the attention the contest is getting though. :) I honestly thought the contest would die in my hands but I've been pleasantly surprised.

I started a thread in Book Discussion where people can start suggesting stories to read. It can be found here.

If you have any questions, let me know.

People suggest stories to read, and after there are enough suggestions, we vote to see which one we'll be reading and discussing. It's a fairly open-ended discussion. You can talk about characterization, the theme(s) of the story, etc.

I think doing a similar thing with poetry might also be a good idea, though I want to see how well this works first.
