    2008 Olympics

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by gigantes, Aug 10, 2008.

    anybody watching these?

china's tibet & darfur situations, the banning of people who support darfur and the murder of an american volleyball team member have created an unpleasant taste in my mouth. but hopefully i'll get over those things.

i'm most interested in seeing how USA basketball does. on one hand i want any team with jason kidd on it to win. on the other hand, if the USA fails to get gold it will be another valuable lesson about the importance of teamwork, so there're positives in that also.

there's probably many other interesting stories, but i'm ignorant at this point.

I've been watching the gymnastics. I find it incredable what these people can do, and would like to learn all the flips and tricks myself. Other than that no, as I am not a sporty person.

A bunch of people all over the world looked at how bad things are starting and shook their heads thinking, We told you so.

OH MY GOD! Did anyone see the 4x100 m race? It was so close but USA won. . . YAY!! Go Phelps! Two more to go to create history! :) I have to say those three minutes were SO intense!

And on a side note: Federer manhandled Tursunov. . . it was nice to see the master back in form.

i don't know much about this situation. is this guy phelps trying to beat the seven gold medals mark spitz won in a single olympics?

i didn't think that would ever be beaten. :O

mm... tennis. i'll have to look for that. i haven't had a favorite player since agassi retired. i was thinking djokovic was going to be it. (wonder if he's playing?)

Yes, Phelps has made it pretty clear he wants to try for 8 gold.

Was anyone surprised at that? Really? He's a Brit, playing tennis. There was only one way it was gonna end.

I expected him to go further than the first round. He's ranked 6th in the world and has been in good form lately, I didn't expect him to get beat by a player ranked 77th.

i see that there are a lot of great british champions, but none for some time... maybe since the 30's or 40's.

some examples: william renshaw, fred perry, reggie doherty, hugh lawrence doherty.

Agreed. The last Englishman to win the Wimbledon was when. . .?

I think Phelps can beat the record.

Oh I should've specified that I was talking about men's singles. in that case it's Fred Perry way back in the 1930s. His statue is in front of the all england tennis club, it's quite hard to believe that no englishman was able to snag the singles title since his time.

I love watching the Olympics! (I'm watching the mens gymnastic finals now).
Last night I watched the mens relay swimming team and the US totally beat the French and I screamed! It was so awesome! :D

    @banzai & starrynight,
my point is that the UK is not that badly off tennis-wise. you guys had your years of dominance, just like the US, australia, sweden and others, and now you just have the occasional triumph of some sort. but there are many other countries in the world that play tennis and never had close to your level of success.

just trying to be optimistic, i guess. :)

wow, that's exciting. i'm not aware of anyone in my high school going to the olympics, altho we did produce a couple famous entertainers.

so phelps has won 5/5 gold so far and set the record every time. mark spitz went 7/7 and set the record every time in 1972, so phelps still has two more to nab.

i also read that spitz felt offended that nobody had invited him out to cheer on or congratulate phelps. i have to say i agree with that, seeing as how spitz had the greatest olympics performance ever in swimming, which is phelps' sport of course.

i caught it. from what i could tell it was mainly because that one girl got nervous and botched routines in multiple exercises. also, i didn't catch whether the US was still a man down, meaning their chance to throw away the lowest score out of five got lost. (or maybe that's only something which applies to the prelim stages?)
