He is. And the police have obtained a foreign travel order, preventing him from leaving the country.

After spending most of the day at Heathrow Airport in London, Gary Glitter has been spotted leaving by car.

It is unclear where the singer was heading.

The convicted child abuser must now sign the sex offenders register, a judge has ruled.

Just hours after Glitter arrived back at Heathrow Airport from Bangkok, district judge David Simpson agreed to a notification order applied for by police at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court, west London.

A solicitor for the former 70s glam rock star had argued that his conviction for abusing two young girls in Vietnam was "a travesty of justice" and the court should give him time to consider opposing it.

But the judge said that the star had "demonstrated his desire to avoid the jurisdiction of this court" and ordered that he sign on as a sex offender within three days.

The order means Glitter, real name Paul Gadd, will have to tell authorities where he plans to live, be monitored by police and the probation service, and could also face an order prohibiting him from going near children or using the internet.

Glitter was escorted through immigration and customs after touching down on a Thai Airways flight at Heathrow from Bangkok on Friday morning.

The 64-year-old had spent several days trying to avoid returning to the UK following his release from a Vietnamese jail on Tuesday.

But he was refused entry to Thailand twice and Hong Kong once before finally agreeing to leave Bangkok on a plane bound for London.

Glitter had served almost three years in a Vietnamese jail for abusing two girls aged ten and 11.

He was ordered out of Vietnam and travelled to Bangkok, where he was expected to board a flight to Heathrow under the terms of his release.

But on arrival in the Thai capital, Glitter reportedly feigned heart and ear trouble to avoid boarding the UK-bound plane.

He was barred entry to Thailand and warned he would be taken to a detention centre if he continued to refuse to leave the country.

After spending around 20 hours in the transit lounge at Bangkok Airport, Glitter boarded a flight to Hong Kong on Thursday night in the hope that he would be accepted there.

But the Chinese authorities barred him entry and he was put back on a Thai Airways flight to Bangkok. On his arrival he was told by Thai authorities that he was not welcome.

With a growing list of countries stating that they would deny him entry, Glitter agreed to return to the UK.

The former chart-topping singer was convicted of downloading child pornography in the UK in 1999 after a computer repair shop found the images on his laptop and he served two months of a four-month sentence.

He left the country and moved to Spain and Cuba before travelling to southeast Asia, where he escaped detection until he was tracked down by reporters.

He was kicked out of Cambodia after facing allegations of sex crimes and moved to the Vietnamese coastal resort of Vung Tau.

The two girls at first made allegations of rape, which carries a death sentence, but were reportedly paid off with £1,175.

Glitter was arrested trying to leave the country and stood trial, pleading not guilty and claiming he was teaching the girls English. He was convicted and sentenced to three years in March 2006.

Gary Glitter, a singer who spent three years in a Vietnamese jail for child sex abuse, returned to London on Friday after failing to find sanctuary in Asia.

Glitter, famous in the 1970s and 80s for songs such as "Hello, Hello, I'm Back Again" and "I'm the Leader of the Gang (I Am)", arrived at Heathrow airport after an overnight flight on Thai Airways from Bangkok.

He was met by police and escorted away under the flashing bulbs of a pack of paparazzi photographers.

At a court hearing outside London hours after his arrival his lawyer failed in a bid to prevent him having to sign the sex offenders' register, a list of convicted paedophiles kept by the police. His lawyer David Corker said the ruling could be appealed.

"He tells me that his trial in Vietnam - a country which has been condemned by virtually every organisation concerned with justice and human rights as being a system of unfair justice and political trials - was a charade, was a travesty of justice," Corker told reporters.

"He never got a fair trial and in due course that will be expanded upon."

Glitter, 64, was released from jail in Vietnam on Tuesday after serving almost all his three-year sentence. He was then flown to Bangkok for a connecting flight to London, but failed to board the flight saying he had ear and heart problems.

He wandered Bangkok airport for nearly 24 hours despite being declared persona non grata in Thailand. He then flew to Hong Kong but was rejected by Chinese authorities. After returning to Bangkok, he was put on the flight to London.

British media have speculated the singer, whose real name is Paul Gadd, tried to avoid returning for fear of the negative reception he would receive. Since his release, Glitter's every move has been tracked by British tabloid photographers.

Snapshots have shown a pale, drawn figure sporting a long white goatee beard, his face partially hidden by a baseball cap, and a chequered scarf loosely drawn around his neck.

Despite his once-huge fame in Britain, where he had more than 25 hit singles, Glitter fell completely from favour after he was convicted there in 1999 of downloading thousands of images of child pornography onto his personal computer.

He later left the country and moved to Cambodia, staying for several years before being blacklisted, again on sex allegations. He moved to Vietnam, where he was arrested in 2005 and charged with the sexual abuse of two young girls.

He pleaded not guilty but was convicted and sentenced to three years in prison in March 2006.

While Glitter has served time for his crimes, Britain's media have not let up in criticism.

Before his return, the tabloid Sun newspaper told how the "pervert pop star" was coming back and the Mirror printed a headline saying "Warning: This vile man lands back in Britain today" next to a picture of a grinning Glitter.
