hey, so i know that the tide comes in, and the tide goes out. but can anybody tell me, where does it go when it goes out? and why does it go out and come in? why?
I think it has to do with the moon...unless you were speaking metaphoricly...in which case, you went right over my head...
I don't know anything about tides, all I know is that I love it when high tide comes in and you get stuck at the beach it is always so damn funny. *sigh* I miss going to the beach.
From what I understand, its like the water is flat... but the moons gravitational (?) pull sort of pulls it up (sort of like an arc) so it goes up and the tide goes out, an when the moon moves, it flattens out more and goes back in. No idea if thats right though!
There's a challenge ... ignore the real reason for the tidal shifts and write a short story that gives an alternate reason.
fk's on the right track!... it is the pull of the moon's gravitational field that causes the tide to go 'up' and 'down'... it doesn't really go 'out' and 'in'... just seems to, because as it goes 'up' it will reach farther onto the shore and as it goes 'out' it will recede... if you stand on a long jetty or dock, you'll see it merely goes up and down, without moving sideways other than its normal wave action ... i'm sure you'd find some nifty explanations in a google search...
