    New member, new writer!

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by EllieK, Mar 21, 2013.

    Hi everyone :)

My name is Ellie and I'm new to these forums and new to writing. I study human behaviour and used to work as a Family and Relationship Coach/Counsellor. I had wanted to work in that field forever, but the unfortunate reality was that I simply didn't like human beings enough to want to spend my whole day working with them. So I moved more into Behavioural Science and writing.

I write because I am excited by information and just want to share it. I am also trying to torture my family less by not making them listen to the ins and outs of every research article I read. I guess what I really want to do is share the hundreds if not thousands of years worth of information we have accumulated on human behaviour, but in a really short, concise and easy to read way.

My biggest problem with writing is limiting my information. I probably have enough ideas to write a hundred books and have to force myself to write down my ideas and put them away for later. My current book is on combating bullying. It revolves around the fact that bullies have always been here, and always will be. As parents it's time to equip our children with the tools they need to deal with bullies and my book gives them step by step instructions on how to do that. My own daughter has had more suicide attempts than I can count due to severe bullying and my sister died from the effects of Anorexia after years of being taunted about her weight, so this is a subject close to my heart. My daughter is also doing wonderfully now so she is helping me :)

Anyway, I look forward to getting to know you all better and reading your work xo

Hi, I'm sort of in the same situation you're in. I majored in English, but I never wanted to be a teacher. I'm looking to do modeling jobs and finding work in the morgue.

My situation might be a bit more difficult than yours. This is my last year in college. Since I always wanted to be a writer and nothing else, I grew comfortable to not thinking about anything beside this objective.

One of the greatest plus about joining this forum would be I get to find people that share the same passion.

    Hi EllieK!

I know exactly how you feel! I majored in Child Development and currently work with children, but am re-thinking my career choice. I love working with kids of all ages, but am finding it difficult to surround myself with them on a full-time schedule.

I also tend to bore my friends and family when I talk shop, so to speak. My boyfriend is tired of hearing about all the cute things kids say and do. "They aren't our kids!" he always tells me, "And I don't really care how cute they were today." lol

I guess what I'm trying to say is, I know how it feels to want to talk about what you do all day but have it be a subject others find difficult to relate to. I think your book on bullying is a great idea. One thing I've noticed in working with school-age children is that too many parents these days coddle their children and shield them from conflict rather than encouraging them to find a resolution themselves before seeking adult help. I can't wait to read more about it!

    Sincerely,
    Ms. Cotton

    Welcome to Writing Forums, Ellie!

I hope you find what you're looking for here, whatever your interests in writing.

This forum aims to provide the best workshopping resources on the internet, and to that end we have a few rules which you should familiarise yourself with before you get stuck in. The main section of the site is the Writing Workshop, where members can post their writing in order to receive critique of their work.

However, before we allow members to post their work, they must have met some basic requirements. Firstly, you must have been a member for fourteen days, and have made twenty posts on the forum overall (please note, posts in Word Games do not count towards this). This is so that members, when they post their work, have familiarised themselves with the forums and contributed to them (as well as hopefully learned something for themselves). Secondly, members must provide two constructive reviews of other people's work for each piece of their own that they wish to post. This is because we believe that the focus of workshopping should be equally upon giving reviews as receiving them, as they allow a writer to practice and improve their editing skills, which they can then apply to their own writing.

Beyond the Writing Workshop, you will find that we have extensive forums for discussion of aspects of writing, as well as a community area for general discussion. We also run periodic short story and poetry contests, which are good for challenging yourself and expanding your skills. The requirements of the Writing Workshop don't apply to the contests, so new members are allowed (nay, encouraged!) to get stuck in and enter!

If you have any questions or problems, then the moderators (myself, Lemex and Dante Dases) should be your first port of call. Any technical problems with the site itself should be directed to Daniel, the site administrator and owner. I would recommend you have a look over the rules so that you know what to expect, and what is expected. But aside from that, I hope you enjoy your time here.
