    Pav here

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Pav, Apr 4, 2009.

Hey everyone, I'm Bryon Pav. Beginning writer. I'm from San Diego, Ca. I'm 22 years old. I love short stories. I enjoy writing but it's doesn't come naturally for me, possibly because I don't tend to read much fiction. Generally, I'm a little more on the science/math end of the personality spectrum. I'm studying astronomy, I'm possibly gonna become an astrophysicist. I have my doubts though. It just doesn't seem like it will quench my creative tendencies. I used to want to be a screenwriter. I love movies, anything by Paul Thomas Anderson, Charlie Kaufman, Wes Anderson, Stanley Kubrick or the Coen Brothers really floats my boat. Anyway, that said, I'm taking a creative writing class for the second time because i had so much fun the first time, and I'll probably take it again. I'm really starting to love it. I'll be sure to post some short stories soon. I tend to write pretty dark stuff, but my writing style is still under construction. I'm trying to ween myself off the heavy subtext and subliminals in exchange for, you know, letting the reader know what the hell I'm talking about. Anyway, let me know that I belong here. I'm real excited to join the community.

Hello Bryon, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

I am also from the science/math end of the spectrum, but I am also an avid reader. I don't see how anyone can become a writer without first being a voracious reader.

Posting your own work should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

Thanks, Cogito, for the toasty welcome. And thanks a lot for the advice. My creative writing teacher has also stressed the importance of being able to review each other's writing. He makes us review the works of other students as well as published authors, it's had a huge impact on my writing already. I love the sight, I'll be sure to poke in the corners and see what else is around. Nice to meet you.
