    half words or abbreviations

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by Cacian, Jan 25, 2012.

do you use half words and abbreviations in your writing/prose?
    for example words like these

    a) bro/sis/b'days/pa/ma
    B)nicknames
    and
    c) initials like SNP/DLR?

and if so why or what is the purpose of it?

The only place I use them is if my character speaks like that. I'd never use it for the narrator (unless he becomes a character too with that characteristic, but that's very rare).

    a) I'd use that to express the personality of my character through the way he speaks.
    b) Same as a), or if the story is told in 1st person. Then the narrator is able to use nicknames too.
    c) I've never used initials :p

absolutely NOT any you listed but 'ma' or 'pa'... and i'd use those only if it was how the character spoke...

plus, i only use a rare few of the 'new' ones ['btw' and 'fyi' and 'imo' are about the only ones] when emailing or posting... i do use 'ms/mss' however, when referring to manuscripts...
