BBC News has just posted a breaking news headline that JD Salinger (author of "The Catcher in the Rye") has died, at the age of 91. I've never read Catcher myself, but it's been on my to-read list for a long time. Still, it's always sad when a big-name author passes away. Any thoughts?
My kids gave me a JD Salinger book of short stories for Christmas...might be a good time to read it. I'm glad he enjoyed a long life and left behind a legacy. I wish that for all writers. May he rest in peace.
Having read The Catcher in the Rye, I can also say it's a great book. Goodbye Mr. Salinger! You will be missed.
In Highschool I think I was the only one who read Catcher in the Rye more than once and not because I had to. It was probably one of my favorite books and I loved Holden Caulfield. Now that I'm a tad bit more grown up I find a good bit of disdain in the main character, but I still love the novel and revere J. D. Salinger who his amazing writing ability. Also, he was a hermit, and who doesn't love hermits? They're so adorable. He'll be missed.
I wonder what happened to all the stuff he wrote that he hid in his house and wouldn't let anyone publish? A really weird character.
I just heard this sad piece of information on the news. It's always a great loss for the writing world when an author of his caliber dies. I'm just happy that he will always be remembered through Catcher in the Rye, which is his most popular book. I read that he has 15 or so completed manuscripts. Hopefully we get a chance to read some of them in the coming years.
Damn. I read Catcher in the Rye when I was maybe 10 years old and I liked it.....read it again recently and found my love for it again. I agree completely with what Cog said. He'll be remembered for a long, long time. Rest in peace, JD Salinger, and I'm glad you lived a long life, full of happiness and memories and even sorrow, because it all makes life worth living.
