    Blood Types

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by Lydia, Sep 17, 2009.

Okay, here's what this is about:
My sister has to do a project for school about blood types + rhesus factor. The thing is, she's only gotten the blood types of one family so far, and since that's not enough, I decided to ask the people on here.

So, if any of you could give your blood type and rhesus factor + that of your kids/parents (depending on who you are), that'd be really nice. :)
It would be great if anyone was AB/B/ rhesus negative...

    Thanks! :)

Lydia, I'm not sure about my parents' blood types, but I'll find out. My blood type is O-. Is the negative part of that the rhesus factor? Or is that something else entirely?

Edit: My mom is A-, and my dad is O+.

 I don't know, actually. I'll ask my sister later.
But thanks for the effort! :)

You're welcome. If it's something else, just let me know, and I'll try to figure out what mine is.

I don't know what I am. She's lying about the project, guys. She wants to know your types so she knows who to drain next.

That's ok. I didn't mention the non-human blood factors. There are some, ummm, interesting surprises for anyone foolish enough to try such a thing.

I am AB+ and so is my husband. I don't know about our son yet.

I was told my father is O, which led me to doa lot of investigating, and I have yet to confirm it. If it is true, well, eh, I better find the milk man...

    DON'T DO IT!!! IT'S A TRAP!!!!!!!!
I have my families blood grouping all on record somewhere around here, but pregnancy brain took over months ago and I seriously wouldn't be able to find it, even if I spent the next six months looking for it  lol

All I remember is that I am A+ (the number of midwives and doctors that ask you your blood type when you are pregnant is just insane...)

Myself, the youngest is A Negative.

Thanks everybody for your quick replies! :) Some are really useful !

@ San: It does seem a little odd, but perhaps they made a mistake. And there's still a chance that blood types don't inherite excactly the way we think they do ;-)

No, two Rh+ parents can produce an Rh- child (Rh- is recessive), but two type O parents cannot produce a Type A child (A is dominant).

So unless someone is mistyped ...

And is my thoery correct, that no matter what the other parent is, if one is O, then they can't have an AB child? That's what I *think* I remember from my biology class. Just curious.:)

No, an AB parent and an O parent can have an A, B, AB, or O child.

this is Lydia's sister once again... :)

Cogito , I agree with the post after mine, I know how blood types inherite, if I didn't I wouldn't be doing the research, so I do think it's a mistake as well.

But I don't agree with your last post, an AB parent and an O parent can't produce and AB child. As you said yourself, A and B are dominant, O is recessive, so the children will either be A or B. ( not O or AB)

unless, as I said before, we don't know everything about blood type inheritance yet... but that's very unlikely, at least in the case of the ABO-blood types.

A and B factors are independent factors. The O parent lacks both factors, i.e. has an O-O donor pair. The AB parent can have an A-A pair or an A-O pair, and a B-B or a B-O pair. Each parent domates half a pair. The O parent will donate an O in each case. The other parent can donate an A, a B, both, or neither, and whatever that parent donates fully determines the child's blood type. Recheck it, you'll see that the child can end up with A, B, AB or O.

This heredity model has been very well understood for decades.

    (Lydia's sister)

I don't agree that an AB parent has an AA/O and a BB/O pair,
I have absoloutely never read that anywhere, this is the first time ever. It's not right.

There are three alleles, usually written as : 'i', 'Ia' and 'Ib'. Ia gives bloodtype A, 'Ib' type B and they're both dominant over i, that gives type O. To have bloodtype O you need two 'i' alleles , so 'ii'.
To have blood type A your genotype needs to be either 'Ia Ia' or 'Ia i', for type B either 'Ib Ib' or Ib i' (you were right about those)

But because the alleles 'Ib' and 'Ia' are 'codominant', you get bloodtype AB with genotype 'Ia Ib'. (one allele of each parent)

So the one parent with bloodtype AB, wil give either the allele 'Ib' or the allele 'Ia' to his kid. The other parent with blood type O can only give the allele 'i' ' (since his/her genotype is 'ii')
So the possibilities for the kid's genotype are only: 'Ib i' (gives type B) and 'Ia i' (gives type A)
