Has anyone seen a good fairy tale symbolism in a book?

I'm thinking of adding some fairy tale symbolism into my novel - I'm going to keep it subtle - the reference is the Pied Piper - but my character won't be a musician or anything like that, but rats are linked to him. Anyone seen this done and gone wow , that's cheesy!
I saw V.C. Andrews do it in Flowers in the Attic with Hansel and Gretel and it was aprop but other than that I can't offhand think of any others.

I think you have to make it subtle but obvious.

Does it matter if anyone else has done it? The point of writing is to take something and make it your own. There is nothing new under the sun, but how you tell your story determines whether it is original and whether or not it works.
