Greetings from what is usually sunny California

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by cougre, Apr 28, 2010.

I never considered myself a writer. I've been an engineer for thirty years but now enjoy the semi-retired status that was forced upon me a few years ago. Then last November I got it in to my head to write a novel... not just a novel but trilogy. Its not anything that will see the light of day (copyright issues), but it has been a fun hobby and I've nearly completed the first volume.

My purpose here? I'll be the one lurking in the shadows picking up tips and occasionally picking a brain or two for suggestions. Maybe once I finish my current project, I'll try my hand at something I'll actually be able to publish.

    Hey, how's it going?

Copyright issues? Sounds interesting and exciting all at the same time. What's that all about?

Hola Cougre, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Please read How to Use the Review Room before you post there. Posting your own writing for people to comment on should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

Also, be aware that posting a piece of writing on any public site, including this one, will greatly diminish your chances of selling it for publication. Removing the writing later does not alter that fact - once posted, it is irreversibly considered published. So do not post anything more than a small excerpt of any piece you are planning to submit for publication.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). Also, please use the same thread for all revisions and additional excerpts from the same piece of writing. See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

Its a cross-over story in what is generally called "fan fiction". Its my understanding that 'rights' are almost never granted to outsiders. Which is fine since I never expected to sell it anyway.

Fan-fiction... I've never like that term.

Its a story that starts out in the Star Wars universe just after Alderaan was destroyed by the first Death Star. The rest of the series takes place in Middle Earth and centers around a young Jedi and his adventures there. It is constructed so that it doesn't alter any of the established facts in either universe.

Science fiction and fantasy in one bundle, wow. That sounds fascinating, especially if it's (apart from the obvious) adherent to both series. Do you have it posted on fanfiction.net? I might look it up sometime if it's there and I find time.

Writing a novel is a great feeling, isn't it? :D I'm glad you seem to be having a lot of fun with it.

Welcome, welcome. You know, fan fiction does not have to stay that way. I know from experience, if you tweak it, reestablish the setting a bit, and don't use any copyrighted themes, you could make it wholly your own. After all, so many professionals are doing the equivalent of fan fiction on the big screen. Think about it this way, A young Star Strider, confronts the dangers of being stranded on a primitive planet where the same pre-cataclysm technology his holy order maintains and protects is being used as "magic".
