Hello there, It's nice to meet you. I've always loved books, reading has been a large part of my life. I started writing in middle school, mostly fan-fiction and it was very long and rambling; without much of a plot. I suppose that stems from my method; creating vast and complex worlds and then sticking characters in and seeing what would happen. The world and the characters always come first, and I have a bad habit of trying to describe things too much, so the pacing and action suffer. To be fair I never did finish any of my stories; I'd always lose interest in a particular "fandom" and move on to the next before I got that far. I haven't really written anything in quite some time. Though earlier this week, while having a conversation with my dad; I came up with a concept for a sci-fi story that I'm currently fleshing out. I'm excited to be working on something again, and doubly so because it's not fan-fiction this time. At any rate, I thought it might be a good idea to join a writing forum. Perhaps the extra input will help me finish this one, and maybe I can pick up some tips to help me curb my over-descriptive habits. The last thing I was working on was a Fallout 3 fan-fiction, which I know I'll pick up again someday. It was probably the best thing I'd ever written, even though I only finished 3 chapters. The main reason I've joined this forum is to get some feedback and constructive criticism on what I've got so far with this sci-fi concept. Right now I'm mostly trying to flesh out the human and alien cultures, the humans are fairly easy; but I've run into some snags with the aliens. I feel its important to solidify the overall culture for each before I delve into character specifics so that there's an established background to draw from when I actually get down to how they'll interact. So if someone can point me to the right sub-forum for that kind of discussion that'd be great. ~Auren

This forum aims to provide the best workshopping resources on the internet, and to that end we have a few rules which you should familiarise yourself with before you get stuck in. The main section of the site is the Writing Workshop, where members can post their writing in order to receive critique of their work. However, before we allow members to post their work, they must have met some basic requirements. Firstly, you must have been a member for fourteen days, and have made twenty posts on the forum overall (please note, posts in Word Games do not count towards this). This is so that members, when they post their work, have familiarised themselves with the forums and contributed to them (as well as hopefully learned something for themselves). Secondly, members must provide two constructive reviews of other people's work for each piece of their own that they wish to post. This is because we believe that the focus of workshopping should be equally upon giving reviews as receiving them, as they allow a writer to practice and improve their editing skills, which they can then apply to their own writing. Beyond the Writing Workshop, you will find that we have extensive forums for discussion of aspects of writing, as well as a community area for general discussion. We also run periodic short story and poetry contests, which are good for challenging yourself and expanding your skills. If you have any questions or problems, then the moderators (myself, Cogito, Lemex and Dante Dases) should be your first port of call. Any technical problems with the site itself should be directed to Daniel, the site administrator and owner. Too much description, you say? Well, I seem to focus too much on action when I write... Maybe I could be your archenemy, Actionman, and you can be Exposition-gal/guy. Thanks for the welcome guys! To be fair, I'd much rather combine our powers in some kind of "Captain Planet" type thing, and make a really good story than pit exposition against action.
