    Oh Dear...

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Quinn T. Senchel, Jul 23, 2012.

I'm not very good at writing introductions, but clearly, I'm new here. There isn't much I can say that hasn't been said before, but I've recently begun working on a novel which is how I stumbled upon this site. I've written bounds of poetry, some of them have been published or have won awards. I've also been involved with Role Playing stories on the internet, but never have I felt motivated enough to finish a novel. I feel like I can actually work this current idea into something brilliant though. I don't like to stick to one particular genre or theme, I feel that's limiting. And only by reading the work of others and receiving constructive criticism can one improve upon their writing. So here I am, nice to meet yous.

    Some run downs on myself:
    • I live on the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada.
    • I attend University where I do a Bachelor of Science in a combined major of Biology & Psychology,
    • I intend to get into medical school when I complete my undergraduate degree.
    • I'd consider myself more of a painter/sketch artist than a writer
    • I'm terribly awkward about showing my writing to friends and family.
    • I love music & wine.

    Hey! Welcome!

The thing i wanted to bring up is about your lack of motivation to finish a novel that you spoke of. For me, I find it's the easiest and most fun when making all the details up and setting the plot line etc, but it's always pulling teeth when i have to get down to writing it all down. Here's a tip: Surprise yourself. If you turn an event or a character in a different direction that you're excited about, it makes the process much more enjoyable and pages just fly by. Hope this small bit helped!

Hey! Thank you for the tip and thank you for welcoming me :) . I'm always very good at coming up with brilliant characters and sometimes I can construct a solid plot. Once it comes to actually writing though, I freeze and it all falls apart. The skeletons of stories keep building up on my hard drive and I've got more characters than I'll ever really need. That's probably why I'm a better poet, because poems are shorter and easier to manage. Logos isn't behind poetry, pathos is. But this story I have now I feel very inspired to finish it, it's so thrilling. I haven't felt like this in a long time.

Welcome to Writing Forums, Quinn T. Senchel!

I hope you find what you're looking for here, whatever your interests in writing.

This forum aims to provide the best workshopping resources on the internet, and to that end we have a few rules which you should familiarise yourself with before you get stuck in. The main section of the site is the Writing Workshop, where members can post their writing in order to receive critique of their work.

However, before we allow members to post their work, they must have met some basic requirments. Firstly, you must have been a member for fourteen days, and have made twenty posts on the forum overall (please note, posts in Word Games do not count towards this). This is so that members, when they post their work, have familiarised themselves with the forums and contributed to them (as well as hopefully learned something for themselves). Secondly, members must provide two constructive reviews of other people's work for each piece of their own that they wish to post. This is because we believe that the focus of workshopping should be equally upon giving reviews as receiving them, as they allow a writer to practice and improve their editing skills, which they can then apply to their own writing.

Beyond the Writing Workshop, you will find that we have extensive forums for discussion of aspects of writing, as well as a community area for general discussion. We also run periodic short story and poetry contests, which are good for challenging yourself and expanding your skills.

If you have any questions or problems, then the moderators (myself, Cogito, Lemex and Dante Dases) should be your first port of call. Any technical problems with the site itself should be directed to Daniel, the site administrator and owner. I would recommend you have a look over the rules so that you know what to expect, and what is expected. But aside from that, I hope you enjoy your time here.

    Hi there, QTS.

One thing I've learned is that writing a novel requires a little discipline, for those moments when the inspiration flags.

I've noticed that too so far. Very tough to be disciplined when you're trying to balance a busy academic & social life but ever since the summer hit and I've had more time to relax, I noticed a resurgence of inspiration.

There is no shortage of writers. No one should force themselves to write. Write if you have a motivation for writing.

I disagree. I think it helps you improve and it makes writing come more naturally.
I became a much better writer when other writers relied on me to keep up with RPs,
and when I entered poetry contests and had to commit to writing poems.

There's always time to go back, revise, and decide whether what you did was brilliant and useful or if it belongs in your trash bin.
That's just me though. And obviously, I wouldn't quit my day job :p Writing is a hobby.
