    Hello...

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by LFTM, May 19, 2008.

    Hello people.

My name is Brandon, a good name, but not picked by me. I wonder why the thing that most defines you is picked by someone else...Probably has to do with a babies lack of speach; or because the tough decison of picking your own name would cause your head to explode.

Anyway...I digress. My name is Brandon, and I don't write often. I am however, on occasion, bitten by the sudden and violent urge to write. Followed by this is the urge to have people tell me how great I am. Hopefully this place works out for both. I could settle for one of the two though.

This introduction covers very little, which I like. So I'm gonna call it good.

welcome to the forum. Quite an interesting intro that is for sure.

I have an answer to the whole name thing though....it is our parents way of showing us that they hold that power over us and that they can control us from the moment we are born....but in fact, it is us that controls them.....

well have fun around the boards anyways...bye now.

Hello Brandon, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

    welcome, brandon!

good question, btw... i like the american tribal people's practice of assigning a 'baby name' that's used till the child 'comes of age' at puberty, when s/he then will take on her/his own name that 'comes' to one on a 'vision quest'...

i seem to have done that, before i even knew of the practice, having divested myself of my old life and old identity at 57 and gone out into the 'wilderness' to study humanity full-time... the tribal people i gave rides to and met otherwise along the way called me 'no-name-yet' when, after asking my name, i told them it hadn't found me yet... that's when i learned about how 'crazy horse' had seen a horse acting strangely when on his vision quest and was told that i was on one of my own, albeit a few decades late! ;-)

sure enough, after a few months as 'no-name-yet' when i returned to the greek island of mykonos for another 6-week stay, it did!... and i've been 'maia' ever since...

hope yours will find you soon... it will, if you just watch for 'signs'...

    love and hugs, maia
