    Whadda know, another writer.

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Velox, May 9, 2010.

As you have probably guessed, since I joined a writing forum, I love to write. Although I haven't really written much [about five short stories, two poems, and a bunch of unfinished stuff/random ideas], I do love to write and I am working on writing more and more.

Currently I'm trying to write a murder mystery [or possibly a serious of murder mysteries] which features a team of investigators who, that's right, you guessed it: solve cases. I won't say any more on that for now.

Anyway, my real name is Andrew, and I am a fifteen year old sophomore in high school. "Velox" is a Latin word meaning "swift," and is also the alias I use on a BIONICLE fansite on which I am a staff member. On that note, yes I am a BIONICLE fan. I'm not really into the sets any more, but I do enjoy the storyline and the overall concept. In fact, most of my writing has been fanfiction for BIONICLE [with usually a more humanistic tone (so it'd be similar, to, say, X-Men)], but I've been writing human-based stories recently.

Some of my favorite book series include Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot detective mysteries [there's about thirty-three of them, if I remember correctly; haven't yet read them all], Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl series, J.R.R. Tolkien's the Lord of the Rings, and others. My favorite poet would have to be Edgar Allen Poe, especially with his The Raven. Not to mention his various short stories such as Cask of Amontillado, et cetera.

My favorite TV series would definitely have to be NCIS, and my favorite movie would be The Dark Knight.

The main reason I joined this site was because I want to get more active with writing, and the weekly contests as well as the reviewing forums you guys have here really interested me. I especially like how you make people review twice before posting something on their own, which definitely encourages reviews, which are greatly needed. I hope to write some reviews of my own soon, but I'm not sure when that'll be as school and other things have been quite busy for me.

And as you've probably realized by now, I do tend to ramble on at times.

Other than that, there's not much left to say, really. Looking forward to being more active here.

    Good evening, fellow newbie. Welcome!

So you're going from Bionicle fanfiction to a murder mystery? What a weird transition. Awesome.

Hello Velox, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Please read How to Use the Review Room before you post there. Posting your own writing for people to comment on should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

Also, be aware that posting a piece of writing on any public site, including this one, will greatly diminish your chances of selling it for publication. Removing the writing later does not alter that fact - once posted, it is irreversibly considered published. So do not post anything more than a small excerpt of any piece you are planning to submit for publication.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). Also, please use the same thread for all revisions and additional excerpts from the same piece of writing. See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

    Velox Hi! Welcome to WF.

If your gang of crime solvers has a great Dane with them I have to tell you that I think Hannah Barbera have already taken that. If not GOOD LUCK!!! I've only been on the forum for a few short weeks and have already learned a lot so it seems to be a good place to be.
