I love it, but I hate it just the same (I'm new here!)

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Fyarl666, Apr 4, 2012.

I'll start off by saying that I am new here. Just trying to find a little technical and creative support for my writing.

I have been writing off and on for my whole life, but I am getting serious with my writing as of late, trying very hard to come up with something worth publishing.

Ever day I write. And every day I struggle with it. I love it, it is very important to me. But at the same time I hate it. It's hard, and I fear I will fail at every attempt. Does anyone else feel like this?

I think my hatred of writing is because I desperately want to be good at it, and when I can't find the right words, I get frustrated. To me, writing it like going to the gym and lifting weights and running on the treadmill, but you are exercising your mind instead of your body. The process is hard, exhausting at times, like trying to push a boulder uphill using only your mind. But after all the whining and complaining, exercising the body, just like exercising the mind, is nothing but good for you.

Every day I tell myself "Screw it, I'm not going to write today. I'm going to sleep all day. I'm going to watch TV. I'm going to play video games for hours."
But then I tell myself "No writer ever became successful (notice I don't say 'famous') by sitting on their ass day after day."

    Then I write.

I write when it's hard. I write because it's hard.

Anyone else feel the same? Tell me I'm not alone in this!

PS, I wrote 830 words today, just enough to finish the short story I was currently working on.

I'm stuck for a new idea, but I'm sure I'll have one by tomorrow.
A new boulder to push up a new hill.

I'm sorry you are all alone, unique and special in all the world cause no one else has any problem writing great stories whenever they desire. You happy now? Or did you just want to vent? You know already, you're no different then anyone else. Everyone has their bad moments, some more then others. Just remember, the harder the struggle, the more satisfying it is when you succeed.

You can consider that a slap in the face if you want. Now go back to work.

    Hi Fyarl, and welcome! :)

Trust me, you are not alone! I think this is a common frustration among writers, and what a great analogy. All you can do is keep writing, writing, writing. Even when you hate every single word that you type. Something good of it will come in the end, be it your masterpiece or simply mastering the art of discipline.

Writing can sometimes be difficult, sure, but most often I think writers make the process even more difficult because of their expectations.

    Welcome to Writing Forums, Fyarl666!

I hope you find what you're looking for here, whatever your interests in writing.

This forum aims to provide the best workshopping resources on the internet, and to that end we have a few rules which you should familiarise yourself with before you get stuck in. The main section of the site is the Writing Workshop, where members can post their writing in order to receive critique of their work.

However, before we allow members to post their work, they must have met some basic requirments. Firstly, you must have been a member for fourteen days, and have made twenty posts on the forum overall (please note, posts in Word Games do not count towards this). This is so that members, when they post their work, have familiarised themselves with the forums and contributed to them (as well as hopefully learned something for themselves). Secondly, members must provide two constructive reviews of other people's work for each piece of their own that they wish to post. This is because we believe that the focus of workshopping should be equally upon giving reviews as receiving them, as they allow a writer to practice and improve their editing skills, which they can then apply to their own writing.

Beyond the Writing Workshop, you will find that we have extensive forums for discussion of aspects of writing, as well as a community area for general discussion. We also run periodic short story and poetry contests, which are good for challenging yourself and expanding your skills.

If you have any questions or problems, then the moderators (myself and Cogito) should be your first port of call. Any technical problems with the site itself should be directed to Daniel, the site administrator and owner. I would recommend you have a look over the rules so that you know what to expect, and what is expected. But aside from that, I hope you enjoy your time here.

No, I never thought I was unique in my struggles, I was just wondering if I was the only one who felt like they hated the process as much as they loved it. Consider me slapped. Now I must go, I have writing to do!

LOL, I was in a strange mood and couldn't resist. Welcome to the forum. A lot of the worthwhile things in life carry a love/hate relationship. To a certain degree that's what makes them worthwhile when you succeed. Hope you find your time and efforts here worthwhile. And have a little fun while you're at it. I didn't see anything in the rules prohibiting it.

I have a kinda diff problem

I write; but have wait until later to see it from a different perspective. Sometimes days and days go by. I may even change it...change it back...but them I'm slightly loony. I have accepted that. Usually I am never satisfied. It's difficult to ask someone to critique it. They may not want to disappoint you, or conversely, they may want to disappoint you. Messed up ya?
Just write it; chuck it out there and see what happens.
