Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by daisyfly, Oct 12, 2007.

Hello all. I stumbed across this site earlier today, and I am so glad I did. I have read several pieces in here that I was quite impressed by. It is so wonderful to find a community where everone takes this craft seriously, but where they also love and enjoy what they are doing.

    Happy writing, everyone!

Hello! I for one do take this 'craft' seriously as you put it. I enjoy writing as I imagine you do but I also enjoy reading talented authors as well and if necessary offering my thoughts on that piece. It's great to have you here and should you have any question feel free to ask. I'm looking forward to our meeting in the threads.

Be sure to consider entering our short story contest - open to all! See link for details.

Hello Daisyfly, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Taking writing seriously? Yes and no. I put my best efforts into giving what I write the best face, but I also believe that if it isn't fun, it isn't worth the effort.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room on this site, therefore, is a true workshop, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work. See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

Hey Gannon. Is your quote "il n'y a même que le merveilleux qui soit beau" from The Surrealist Manifestoes?

Indeed it is. I studied Desnos for my dissertation and by extension Breton and the Manifestoes. Well spotted. :)

Basically it alludes to the marvellous being the only beauty in the world, specifically in literature. The mundane and the average is just that. The Surrealists only wished to concern themselves with the marvellous, the beautiful and ultimately that which they themselves deemed a worthy topic of discussion and source of inspiration.
