    Help name this forum

Discussion in 'Debate Room' started by Daniel, Oct 20, 2013.

There's been an ongoing discussion for a while on whether or not we should add a debate-type forum here in The Lounge. Because there's an interest and because debate threads seem to pop up in the lounge often, we're going to go ahead and add it and see how it goes.

Right now I'd like your help naming the forum. There were some names suggested in this thread. If you have a better idea mention in this thread and I'll add it as a poll.

    Forum rules to follow.

At your own risk, does that mean I can be frank? ;) I also like pens and swords.

Intellectual round table, hmmm ... not so much. I think I bring supporting evidence to the table, but not everyone readily agrees to intellectual debate ground rules.

Thunderdome. Do I really have to explain?

But since I don't plan to have much to do with it, my vote doesn't count (and I didn't select from the list).

Wow, you really don't like the name choices, do you? Such colorful language.

If you call it 'bare knuckle boxing' people will know what they're letting themselves in for and if shit gets real they can't start crying to mods, in fact whoever goes crying should be infracted. Enter At Your Own Risk or Hand Penades - see what I done there? D) Hand Penades - Gerrit? Probably funnier in my head :(

Well it can't be called 'Bear Knuckle Boxing,' otherwise PETA will be beating down the door to the forum.

All I can say is that the moderation better be brutal and unforgiving and the rules better be at least two pages long. :(

Wait a second...I thought you believed in 'Survival of the Fittest?' I've never seen a moderator pop out of nowhere in the outback and stop a lion from killing a gazelle.

I think the whole point of it being called the cage or the thunderdome is there will be little in the way of rules - a bit like UFC - without an umpire - and barbed wire around the ring - with flaming torches and skewered heads - AYOR!

I do believe in survival of the fittest, but not in this case. ;)

I was thinking a high-brow lecture-style debate with alloted time for both positions and small glasses of water under the podium.

Who's gonna hold the chair to the throat of the lions/lionesses.

To be honest I'm getting bored with all the bitching, the back-biting, the running for google links to back up illegitimate claims, the bare face ignorance of undisputed fact, the ne'er die attitude rather than concede a mistaken point. Minds don't change around here - even the thread regarding Why Do We argue turned into a farcical argument.

I'm not against the idea of a debate room - I just don't see it remaining a debate room; There will be tears.
As someone once said to William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings, "Watch him - he'll have some freeker's eye out!"

The problem is that a true debate is supposed to convince the crowd, not the debaters. Usually it's one person gives their thought-out dissertation on a topic, then the next person gives it, then they have short rebuttals, final remarks and everyone goes home.

I've watched a lot of debates on YouTube, so I am kind of an expert. Also, I stayed at a Holiday Inn last night.

I wish you well with this one Daniel!

I've seen these 'debate' forums elsewhere and they do seem to attract a lot of point scorers.

I have a very strong preference for "Debate Room" because it is absolutely clear exactly what the room is for.

One thing we could do is have a minimum post limit before you're allowed to post here (like for the Workshop). Hopefully that will deter new members looking to cause trouble.
