Peeking out from behind my corner :)

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by sunsplash, Oct 29, 2012.

    Hello all,

I've been lurking around this forum for a few months now and have decided to slowly make my way out of my hiding place. I've greatly enjoyed what I have been reading and learning since signing up and while intimidating, I appreciate the honesty and "reality checks" given. I did make my first post a few days ago asking some questions about potential obstacles with my most recent work, and while I'd searched for them before creating my own OP, it was still too similar to others and deleted. :( I understand fully but was still disappointed since I really tried to be original! Oh well...no hard feelings and I expect it won't be the last time, haha.

I'm a mom to two young children and use writing as my "me" time. I've mostly written fiction and poetry but have recently taken on the the seemingly impossible task of a memoir. I'm my own worst enemy and my brain too often makes me second guess my heart. I will perservere, though!

I don't expect to be an extremely active member but I'm very fond of the forum rule requiring critiques before submissions - it makes me very comfortable in knowing if and when I share my work that I will receive appropriate reviews from other committed writers and receive the same respect I deliever.

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to be apart of this forum! :)

    Welcome to Writing Forums, sunsplash!

I hope you find what you're looking for here, whatever your interests in writing.

This forum aims to provide the best workshopping resources on the internet, and to that end we have a few rules which you should familiarise yourself with before you get stuck in. The main section of the site is the Writing Workshop, where members can post their writing in order to receive critique of their work.

However, before we allow members to post their work, they must have met some basic requirements. Firstly, you must have been a member for fourteen days, and have made twenty posts on the forum overall (please note, posts in Word Games do not count towards this). This is so that members, when they post their work, have familiarised themselves with the forums and contributed to them (as well as hopefully learned something for themselves). Secondly, members must provide two constructive reviews of other people's work for each piece of their own that they wish to post. This is because we believe that the focus of workshopping should be equally upon giving reviews as receiving them, as they allow a writer to practice and improve their editing skills, which they can then apply to their own writing.

Beyond the Writing Workshop, you will find that we have extensive forums for discussion of aspects of writing, as well as a community area for general discussion. We also run periodic short story and poetry contests, which are good for challenging yourself and expanding your skills.

If you have any questions or problems, then the moderators (myself, Cogito, Lemex and Dante Dases) should be your first port of call. Any technical problems with the site itself should be directed to Daniel, the site administrator and owner. I would recommend you have a look over the rules so that you know what to expect, and what is expected. But aside from that, I hope you enjoy your time here.

Welcome to the forum, sunsplash. I think part of the charm of online forums is that you can be as anonymous as you want while getting feedback about your work. There may be a few people here that have been published, but myself and several others have not, which means the community can be quite diverse. I love reading others' works, and I'm sure I'm not the only one here. I am also fairly new here (still haven't passed the 14 day mark yet), but I look forward to reading your works when you are finally posting here. Since you mentioned about writing a memoir, I would like to point you to a post on this website that I found interesting. It is about publishing--an issue I was not aware of about until I stumbled upon it: <Does posting work here harm our chances of being published?>. Again, welcome to the community.

Thanks, and a welcome to you as well! If I do post, it'll be works not intended for publication so the memoir is staying under wraps for now unless maybe I share via PM. Right now I'm dealing with the legalities that accompany the inclusions of certain persons and it's a PITA. If I wasn't gung-ho on keeping it true to life it'd be so much easier to fictionalize everything. That would defeat the purpose of writing it, however, so until I find a literary attorney I'm stuck. All in good time though...all in good time.

    Hello again!

It's been quite a while since I've posted, though I have been back back browsing around for a bit and was mostly a lurker anyway. Some people may have received random 'likes' on various posts recently and it made me think perhaps a reintroduction would be nice. Rather than rehashing the same thing in a new thread, I dug up this old post instead.

Progress on my memoir has stalled twice in the last 18 months with the last spell lasting almost a half year. Confronting old wounds had made for good writing but also resurfaced more pain than I expected was left...at one point I considered abandoning the project but the time away just reminded me how important it is, to me, to complete. I'm in the process now of going through old notes and making fresh outlines/timelines (with fleshed out memories omitted the first go 'round) to use for either revamping what I have or just using my WIP as a sort of appendix for something new.

That's my update for now! It feels good to be back. :)

Welcome back, sunsplash! Good to see you again! I'm glad you're persevering with the project - that's inspiring to people like me, who sometimes need a kick in the ass. :)

Ha, well hopefully I'll get my own fair share of swift kicks here when needed!
