    Hey.. It's just me.

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by *Katie, Jul 22, 2012.

I'm Katie. I write to express, not impress. I'm 13 and in the 8th grade, so my writing is probably horrible compared to others on this website. My reason for joining this website it because I am in desperate need of what others think of my writing. I want criticism so I know what to improve on. I am in the midst of starting a novel. I've basically just been writing a few 5 page starters for a novel. I'm trying to find one that I would like to continue. So far I have three by myself, and one with a fellow classmate. Sometimes I write poetry, but not too often. I usually write poetry when I am having trouble thinking of new ideas for a novel.
So I'm abviously new to this, and
I'm guessing people can comment on this? I don't realy know. So heres two ideas for my novel. Tell me whatcha think, thanks :)..

    1. A girl pianist, who is now 17, went blind when she was around 6 years old. So everyday for 11 years, she has been blind. Except for in her dreams. She loves dreaming because she gets to see color, pattern, sunlight, and life. She absolutely loves it. She yearns to be able to see again, to be able to see her mother, a sunset, flowers, a beach, anything and everything. And her wish finally becomes true. She is given experimental surgery to make her be able to see again. And it works. The only bad part to it, is that now she's blind in her dreams.

    2. (This is the one that I'm co-writing with my classmate) It's the year 4032, the world of science is thriving. Technology is more advanced than ever before. Enviromental problems are being fixed. The economy is finally becoming sane again. Wars are winding down, and peace is arriving. Everything seems to be coming together and making the world a perfect place. But not for long. And experiment in space gone wrong leaks a toxic goas that is attracted straight to the sun. And At first it seems to have no effect, but they soon realize that it has a major effect. But not in outer space. The effect is on earth.
Now, the only time your safe is at night, because when your in sunlight and have a shadow, it now controls you. Shadows now control the people they come from. They're their weakest at high noon, when you have the least shadow, but the strogest at sunset and sunrise when your shadow is larger. The only way to keep sane is by staying the shade, but people aren't the only ones being effected. It's turning harmless fruits and vegtables poisonious. Any food grown outside by water and the sun, is now uneatable. So now there is also a worldwide famine. And the human race can't last forever sitting in the shade.

    Welcome to Writing Forums, Katie!

I hope you find what you're looking for here, whatever your interests in writing.

This forum aims to provide the best workshopping resources on the internet, and to that end we have a few rules which you should familiarise yourself with before you get stuck in. The main section of the site is the Writing Workshop, where members can post their writing in order to receive critique of their work.

However, before we allow members to post their work, they must have met some basic requirments. Firstly, you must have been a member for fourteen days, and have made twenty posts on the forum overall (please note, posts in Word Games do not count towards this). This is so that members, when they post their work, have familiarised themselves with the forums and contributed to them (as well as hopefully learned something for themselves). Secondly, members must provide two constructive reviews of other people's work for each piece of their own that they wish to post. This is because we believe that the focus of workshopping should be equally upon giving reviews as receiving them, as they allow a writer to practice and improve their editing skills, which they can then apply to their own writing.

Beyond the Writing Workshop, you will find that we have extensive forums for discussion of aspects of writing, as well as a community area for general discussion. We also run periodic short story and poetry contests, which are good for challenging yourself and expanding your skills.

If you have any questions or problems, then the moderators (myself, Cogito, Lemex and Dante Dases) should be your first port of call. Any technical problems with the site itself should be directed to Daniel, the site administrator and owner. I would recommend you have a look over the rules so that you know what to expect, and what is expected. But aside from that, I hope you enjoy your time here.

Hi Katie, I'm a young writer from Ohio myself. You and your friends seem to have great imaginations judging by your ideas, However your ideas seem just a little farfetched to me. Shadows controlling people seems kind of odd to me. That's okay though. I remember some of the ideas I had when I was thirteen and they didn't make sense either.

CrystalDreamer59: The idea was originally my classmates idea and she needed help so I just joined in. I think the whole idea of it is a little.. different, but my friend always writes crazy things. She never fails to surprise me at our schools writing club.

Your age has nothing to do with skill, it is experience that determines what if you're worth dirt or diamonds. So anyway, toooo business!

It is a brilliant idea, your first one, i think you could really develop a conflict with it. I am not sure how the ending will turn, but it's something you'll just have to surprise us with. I'm thinking that since she was 6, a very young age, she only remembers the image of her mother as it was 11 years ago and so on with every other thing she has grown up with. I'm thinking that she now views things differently, too reliant on the bliss of her younger age. Her mother is now old(er) and weary and the surroundings she has come to imagine in her mind (and dreams) are not what she's come to expect from her new privileged eyesight. I'm imagining that this would be the conflict: Coming to terms with her new eyesight and being given the truth as it appears, capability as a person, and the ability to... well... not be blind figuratively and physically. She must choose to hide in her dreams, knowing they're a much better place, or to face reality as it really is and to shut her head down forever.

The second i have no input on, i am only curious as to what you will do with that yourself. Although, I feel as if some of the factors do not connect though. I figure that since time has advanced 2000ish years, this shadow control should be more of a man made thing. I fear that the toxicity of the sun alone is... a little too much of a stretch, but possibilities are limitless 2000 years in the future, and plots rarely stay constant from beginning to end.

There are my thoughts, I hope I helped you out! ... somehow! Feel free to add me, i have no friends. X/
