    Hi Everyone!

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by foiler, May 1, 2013.

    Hello,

    I'm glad to be here!
I'm working on a project and I could use some advice on poetry.

    Here's What I Do:

I form intricate sculptures with Aluminum foil, I draw unusual cartoon characters, and I write poems related to the figures and cartoons.
My collection is similar to the works of Shel Silverstein; though primarily enjoyed by children, it's appreciated by all ages.

    My Project:

I'm in the process of creating a blog to display my work, with the hopes of turning it into a children's book.
The main section of the blog will display videos of my hands creating aluminum foil figures, photos of the finished figures, the related poems that are associated with the figures, and the pages will be enhanced with unusual drawings and cartoon characters in the white space and margins.

I'm looking for help with my poetry. I'd like to be able to show it to a few experienced people, get some feedback, and some advice on how to improve it.
I could also use some advice on going from blog to children's book.

Can this forum help me? If so, how should I proceed here?

    Thanks,
    Adam

First of all, welcome! It's always nice to see new people joining the community. :) Second of all, yes this forum will be able to help you, but please bear in mind the site rules: you cannot post your own work for review in the workshop (in your case, poetry) until you have posted/commented at least 20 times, and given at least two constructive reviews of other people's work. Once you've done that, you're good to go! Please bear in mind, however, that lots of people here will have different opinions, and most of the time there is no 'right' answer.

But most of all, have fun! :D

    Thank you, Jeepea.

And great quote from Bradbury. That book is one of my favorites. One of the best books on writing ever written.

That sounds like a really cool project, dude. I'm really into poetry as well. Maybe we can help each other out sometime; I'll definitely keep an eye out for you in the workshop in a couple of weeks.

    Hi Trilby,

I just visited your blog. Very nice.

I liked the way you displayed thumbnails at the bottom of the home page, and how the full image appears when you click on them.

I could sure use something like that for my art. Is that a plug-in?

Can you give me any information on it?

    Thanks

    Welcome to Writing Forums, Adam!

I hope you find what you're looking for here, whatever your interests in writing.

This forum aims to provide the best workshopping resources on the internet, and to that end we have a few rules which you should familiarise yourself with before you get stuck in. The main section of the site is the Writing Workshop, where members can post their writing in order to receive critique of their work.

However, before we allow members to post their work, they must have met some basic requirements. Firstly, you must have been a member for fourteen days, and have made twenty posts on the forum overall (please note, posts in Word Games do not count towards this). This is so that members, when they post their work, have familiarised themselves with the forums and contributed to them (as well as hopefully learned something for themselves). Secondly, members must provide two constructive reviews of other people's work for each piece of their own that they wish to post. This is because we believe that the focus of workshopping should be equally upon giving reviews as receiving them, as they allow a writer to practice and improve their editing skills, which they can then apply to their own writing.

Beyond the Writing Workshop, you will find that we have extensive forums for discussion of aspects of writing, as well as a community area for general discussion. We also run periodic short story and poetry contests, which are good for challenging yourself and expanding your skills. The requirements of the Writing Workshop don't apply to the contests, so new members are allowed (nay, encouraged!) to get stuck in and enter! We also have a growing short story club (think book club, but with short stories!), which you can find stickied in the Book Discussion forum.

If you have any questions or problems, then the moderators (myself, Lemex and Dante Dases) should be your first port of call. Any technical problems with the site itself should be directed to Daniel, the site administrator and owner. I would recommend you have a look over the rules so that you know what to expect, and what is expected. But aside from that, I hope you enjoy your time here.
