    Hello everybody

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Seppuku, Jun 20, 2009.

Another new person here...I believe I signed up to these forums a while a go, but I must have gotten it confused with another website, but I am Seppuku, not a real name, but it's what I'll call myself.

I am a student studying at University, I am about to enter my 3rd year, I hope to go into writing professionally and thus (like most people who are likely to visit this site) am an aspiring writer, currently unpublished but I hope to change that. I am going to submit one of my short stories to a writing magazine for next month's issue, so with any luck they'll publish it. Seeing it on a nice shiny page is a worthwhile start i believe.

I am based in the UK, in fact I'm from around Cambridgeshire, but am in the Midlands when I am studying.

As for what I write? I write short stories, but have been working at 2 novels, 2 at the same time sounds silly, but I got 10,000 words into one and then NaNoWriMo happened and thus I ended up working on another (I hit the 50,000 words needed for NaNoWriMo and thus have my first draft complete...though it seriously needs work) I have written the odd bit of poetry, but that's where I consider myself weak. I am also interesting review and article writing, and have written a few myself, but only for my own blog work and a friend's review site that no longer exists.

Genres I enjoy include Sci-Fi and fantasy, though I'm not too heavy into them, I like gothic, horror and 'life' stories the most, the odd one interests me and dystopian sci-fi is normally a winner for me. But when it comes to writing, I consider it psychological, though my most recent work has ventured into dystopia, my NaNoWriMo actually combined the two.

Favourite Authors: Kazuo Ishiguro, HP Lovecraft, Stephen King and Edgar Allen Poe

So that's my introduction and a hello to you all.

Hello Seppuku, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Posting your own work should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). Also, please use the same thread for all revisions and additional excerpts from the same piece of writing. See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

Hello there all. Thank you for the welcomes.

And hello there lazerus and I am here by coincidence as I did not see your post over at TGC. ;)

Cogito [ergo sum?], thanks for the pointers and it sounds like a good way to run a writing forum - I'd be more than happy to review and critique before posting my own work. ;) It seems fair, after all how can I expect people to look at my work if I refuse to look at theirs first?
