    Hello, I am Halla

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Hallaloth, Mar 4, 2013.

Decided it was finally time to step into a larger body of writers as I do not know many dedicated ones personally. Been writing (or rather attempting to write) for almost as long as I have been obsessed with reading. Began actively reading of my own volition in the 4th grade. Began to devour every horse book I could get my hands in the 5th, and by 6th grade had discovered a love for High Fantasy that has never faded. I do occasionally pick up other genres, but not often. 'Real world' tales tend to bore me.

I might have begun attempting to write a story in the 5th grade, but the story I have longed to pen has been with me (and obviously evolving) since I was five. I suppose some would claim 'imaginary' friends became my cast of characters, but they grow and develop with you (and remaining a nattering presence in the back of your mind forever) 'imaginary' is a bit of an insult.

My goal as a writer is to create a story a person can lose themselves in. A story where you can sit down and forget about everything for a little while. Relating to, learning about, and watching a character grow and develop into something more than what they started has is always a pleasure for me. My desire is to introduce a reader to a person they believe they could meet walking down the street and hold a conversation with. Despite being a fantastical setting I want people to be able to envision a world where magic is the everyday.

My first love in fantasy would be Tamora Pierce, and even now a bit of her down to earth, real as day writing is something that brightens my day and lifts my spirits. Terry Goodkind, author of the Sword of Truth series is a close second and my obsession with George R. R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire is something that is impossible to deny.

When I am not reading (and not writing like I ought to be) I can usually be found on online horse Sim games to waste my time. I am a casual gamer, have one specific MMO I lurk about in, and occasionally try to progress in a few of the console based RPGs my family owns. My favorite TV shows run the line of cheesy mainstream Science Fiction, everything from Star Trek to Star Gate and back to Doctor Who. Taste in music varies all over the map. Everything from Christian Rock, Filk and Folk music, a dabbling in Country and some lighter toned Heavy Metal.

Hoping that stepping in here will improve my writing and re-inspire me.

Hello, nice to meet you. Welcome to WF.

I think I get what you mean about 'imaginary' friends. Since I was at least ten I've had one in particular that has stuck with me and grown and changed with me.

I love fantasy too, but haven't read any of the stuff you've mentioned, so you just gave me something to pick up from the library on my way out. :)

    Welcome to Writing Forums, Hallaloth!

I hope you find what you're looking for here, whatever your interests in writing.

This forum aims to provide the best workshopping resources on the internet, and to that end we have a few rules which you should familiarise yourself with before you get stuck in. The main section of the site is the Writing Workshop, where members can post their writing in order to receive critique of their work.

However, before we allow members to post their work, they must have met some basic requirements. Firstly, you must have been a member for fourteen days, and have made twenty posts on the forum overall (please note, posts in Word Games do not count towards this). This is so that members, when they post their work, have familiarised themselves with the forums and contributed to them (as well as hopefully learned something for themselves). Secondly, members must provide two constructive reviews of other people's work for each piece of their own that they wish to post. This is because we believe that the focus of workshopping should be equally upon giving reviews as receiving them, as they allow a writer to practice and improve their editing skills, which they can then apply to their own writing.

Beyond the Writing Workshop, you will find that we have extensive forums for discussion of aspects of writing, as well as a community area for general discussion. We also run periodic short story and poetry contests, which are good for challenging yourself and expanding your skills. The requirements of the Writing Workshop don't apply to the contests, so new members are allowed (nay, encouraged!) to get stuck in and enter!

If you have any questions or problems, then the moderators (myself, Lemex and Dante Dases) should be your first port of call. Any technical problems with the site itself should be directed to Daniel, the site administrator and owner. I would recommend you have a look over the rules so that you know what to expect, and what is expected. But aside from that, I hope you enjoy your time here.
