Oh yeah, if it hasn't been said already, keep a spray bottle of water handy. If the cats is doing something it shouldn't be (scratching furniture), give it a quick jet stream. Most cats hate getting wet and will run as if you poured lava on them.
That's not always true. I had a cat that liked to sneak into the shower with me and would play with the bathwater. Now I have a cat that loves playing in the toilet.
We tried training them with the water bottle but they soon realized that water isn't a threat and just ignored it.
My dogs have no aversion to water yet jump a mile if they're squirted. (for doing the wrong thing) It depends on how misty the spray is.
The spray bottle works on a lot of cats, but not all of them. Also, the thing is, cats are going to do what they want to do. You can't train a cat never to do something he really wants to do. The best you can do is train him not to do it when you are around ;-) They're not out to please you the way dogs are. They prefer to allow you to delight in their presence. There's a saying that I can't remember exactly how it goes, but it's something like this: Dogs think: Wow, you provide me with love, affection, food and a warm place to sleep. You must be a god! Cats think: Wow, you provide me with love, affection, food, and a warm place to sleep. I must be a god!
There you go, I said I could be wrong - I have a terrible memory That's why you take kitty to the vet right away This is a good idea. I tried but never really managed to get it to work. Cats (some cats?) don't like being blown on so to keep the cat away from my knitting, while I'm knitting at least, I'll gently blow on her when she goes for the yarn. She shakes her head and backs up.
Or a light up cat toy. I bought a mouse on a stick with light up LED eyes that blink and it squeaks. I have never seen a cat get the bejezus scared out of it that bad before. Works great to keep her off the bed and other off limits places.
A milk ring, an empty aluminum candy wrapper, anything on my computer desk...those are all my cat's toys no matter what I buy her.
What does it mean when they bite you? Not hard, just wrapping their arms around you and chewing on you.
Since it's a kitten, it probably thinks your hand or arm is a treat or toy. Just gently pull your hand away and say "no" then go back to doing whatever it was that you were doing. It probably needs more chew toys. A paper towel roll will do.
though some cats just have that "playful" temperament... one of our kittens just won't stop going after my elbow or nose! I don't know why, but it's always those select body parts! still, training does work out nicely. it's only with certain cats that... well, you just can't do that. They are like people in some ways.
Yeah, this cat doesn't understand the meaning of the word "NO!" Spray bottle = ineffective. Same with a bop on the nose, or a loud clap. Jessie does what Jessie wants.
It's just being playful, especially if its not hurting you. My cat will play full on with claws, but he was taught growing up that it was okay. I find that if I say 'owwww', he'll stop long enough for me to have my tattered hand back. How's everything in kitten land?
Fun. Her new favorite activity is to go for a swim in the toilet, then run all over the apartment soaking wet.
Solution: balloon. Once he or she claws at the thing it will go boom, and the cat will fear the thing for the rest of his days. Its rather traumatizing really, but it does work. You might want to look up Pavlov reactions.
waaa...? okay that is the first time i have ever in all my born days heard of a cat that likes water -and i've raised over fifty of them! (Not at once most come from the same family but what ya gonna do when people abandon one or two a year on your doorstep? We've even had some exotic cases...)
My cat likes to play with the water in the toilet, though she doesn't swim in there. She absolutely loves to watch me blow my nose and throw it in the toilet and flush. She gets mad if I don't do it, and throw the tissue in the garbage instead. If for some reason I forget to flush, I'll catch her reaching into the toilet playing with the tissue.
