    Wigging out over inconsistences

Discussion in 'Plot Development' started by peachalulu, Nov 14, 2013.

I'm not taking my own advice, I'm sweating it. I forgot my character smoked he hasn't lit up in ages, he has no access to gain cigarettes the man should be up the wall by now. I also left a thread hanging over a fire bug attempting to start a bonfire. Sheesh.

What do you do - keep trucking and make notes to fix these things in the second draft? This is for nanowrite - so I can't really fiddle too much with it. Got any inconsistency horror stories?

If you're using word, Track Change's comment feature is your BFF right now. Note things, power out the words, come back and fix later. I only trip myself up when I try revising in the middle of a marathon.

If it's for nano, charge ahead. If you like it, edit/re-write it at a future date. And track changes or sometimes I just highlight the section I know needs changing.

If you forgot he smoked, then maybe he doesn't. You just thought you wanted him to, and he's telling you something else.

Have your smoker suddenly say, "Wow I'm doing great off the smokes this long!" Or maybe his friend can say "Hey I haven't seen you smoking in ages, have you given up?" "Yeah I didn't wanna put added pressure on myself by announcing it."

My character's been quarantined in a yard. Maybe I know the wrong people, erebh but they'd be climbing the
fence risking getting shot for their next smoke.

Chicagoliz - I hope not! He needs that lighter to set up a new scene. It's probably because I don't smoke that I haven't
thought about it. I've made him too practical, his focus is more on getting food.

My MC is supposed to be being terrorized day by day by the main antagonist.

    So about that... lol

    Kinda regretted writing that in

I've got a similar thing going on - fortunately, my mc does get the upper hand occasionally.

Have him quit, yes, but he can't walk around dancing after the fact. I think most people associate quitting with foul behaviour, at least for a few weeks.
