    Fire Sword

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by Reximus, Jan 31, 2010.

I'm naming a fire sword or a sword that brings on fire so I would like some suggestions.

A name that doesn't necessarily relate to fire would be okay too.

Some I came up with are:
    Ashbane
    Ashfall
    Ashrune

    Archeus
    Anarchy

I appreciate all advice and thanks for your help :-D.

Fyrian, which means "to supply with fire" in Old English.

The fiery cross, lit and covered in a cloth, then carried around the country by hereditary runners, to rally the soldiers of the Gaelic clans in Scotland, Ireland, Canada, and South Africa, and an internationally-recognised symbol of war.

That's exactly what I thought of when I saw this topic.

Reximus, if you haven't already, you might want to read Brisingr and check out the fire sword in there just so you don't make yours too similar.

And the only suggestion I have is Firestorm lol.

It might be a good idea to -instead of looking at the obvious property of fire- take it's name from another aspect of the sword.

Take inspiration from maybe who uses it, what it symbolizes, what legends it was involved in, what battles it fought in. Also, if you're working in a setting where your story takes place in a pre-developed culture you can name it after one of the gods of that culture? A war hero from that country? I dunno, if all else fails you can have the character that uses the sword in your story name it themselves so if it turns out to be a lame name, it's their fault, not yours.

    Who made it?

Who was most famous for using it?

    Where was it made?

What language do they speak there?

What myths is it a part of?

What mythos is it a part of?

Firewind will be the name of my character's fire blade.
    Why?
Because when it hits oxygen, the embedded chemical compounds react by igniting.

Take into consideration the setting and theme of the story when thinking of the swords name. Names are extremely important in a story. A characters name (a main character anyway) should have meaning. The same goes for an important weapon or icon of the story, such as your fire sword.
It's so annoying to me when I read a fantasy (magic, dragons, etc.) story and they have a character or such named something like John or a basic name like that.
My recommendation is to read other stories, or watch films that have the same theme as the story your watching and take note of the names that they have in there. Don't steal the names, but look them up, see how they relate to the objects or characters they were placed with.
