    Need Help!

Discussion in 'Traditional Publishing' started by Good_writer, Dec 24, 2007.

Hey, everyone, i've just finished writing a novella of about 23,000 words. Does it have a chance of being published? I'm thinking of Puffin, as it is Young Adult.

I doubt Puffin would accept submissions without an agent, etc.

Have you read their guidelines? Is your writing of a high standard? Do you know how to send query letters?

Well, the novella that i have recently written is good, but i don't know how to send a query letter, and i don't know whether puffin would publish a 23,000 word novella.

Is 23,000 a lot or too litte? I know nothing about publishing. What I would suggest though is finding Puffins website that tells you all of the guidelines. For instance, last time I checked, Bloomsbury were not accepting any childrens novels at the moment and you have to send letter first to ask if you can send you novel in, then your novel has to be set out properlly following the guidelines the publishers set etc etc. There is a lot to check up on.

    Merry Christmas everyone!

Hmmm 23,000 seems too short for YA.

Well, ok, if i don't have much chance in puffin, then does anyone knows an online publisher who publishes manuscripts online ( without me having to pay for it)?

It would make it easier if you researched some possible markets and asked to see if any writers have had any experience with them. Or you could check other places to see if they're reputable:

Absolute Write Water Cooler: Check out the beware/background section.

    Preditors & Editors

Those would be a place or two to start.

The reason I suggest you doing the research is that you know the content of your novel and can best compare it to the guidelines and areas of focus of markets out there--what they publish now and intend to publish in the future.

All I can tell from the information provided is that it is YA (which is a broad range) and about 23,000 words. Does it have a genre focus, a particular age group targeted, a niche market possiblility, etc? Those are questions you could easily answer in searching. What you'd get from members here is a shotgun pattern of possible markets, non of which may be on target.

    Just one opinion.
