Agreed. Small segments are good for grammer check and sentance structure. But a whole chapter allows one to get a good feel for the piece.
Start small. You'll get more critiques, and if there are problems with sentence structure, etc, those will be, and should be, dealt with first, You're also more likely to have people return with deeper analysis once you've worked with them to fix the smaller issues.
I think it is important for us to remember that this is an online forum and peoples tolerance for long books are low that they read in person and thus their online tolerance is also significantly lower. I also like to write long and be very descriptive but that does not appeal to the larger audience. What I suggest is try for this forum cutting out the minute details but keep the general points and flow of the story.
I would also add that its good to pace yourself. Get your feet wet in the water before you take to the diving board to dive in. For if you jump to fast in the water and you can not swim you will drown yourself and soak everybody else. So just pace your self and sometimes we who have much zeal need wisdom and discipline to accompany that zeal!
