How long should a covering letter be?

Discussion in 'Publishing' started by abby75, Sep 6, 2012.

I am just about to submit a short story to a magazine, and the online admissions page requires a covering letter. I'm not sure how long this should be, do I outline the entire story of just give a brief hint?

Judging by my own and other people's experiences, generally speaking, covering letters are shorter and less personal in the UK than the US. You should just state the number of words, and genre if more than one genre is accepted, give a very succinct synopsis of the whole story (not a 'hint'--you are not writing a blurb), and any facts about your writing career that are relevant to the submission. Don't kill yourself searching for a quirky 'hook'. And don't forget contact details (but NOT bank details, etc).
