How long was your first draft?

Discussion in 'General Writing' started by Youniquee, May 11, 2013.

    Hi,

I'm currently on my first draft for my novel and I'm almost half way and it's already hit 96,563 words! I don't even know how. I wonder if it's normal to hit really high numbers during a first draft? And is it hard to cut it down if you've had this issue before? I'm scared I won't be able to cut it down enough to fit the typical YA fiction word count. I've already started to remove some characters and plot lines but I don't know if this will be enough...

    Thanks in advance!

The first draft of my novel is 78,000 words. That's pretty short. I estimate the second draft will be about 120,000 words. Before I get to that, though, I want to finish writing some shorter pieces - a novella that's incomplete at 23,000 words, a novelization of a screenplay that will be about 60,000 words (I think), and a series of short stories (I've just finished the first at 10,500 words).

~134,000 words. But it is a duology with a clear reason to split it into two parts.

the first draft of my first novel was only around 75k, so i had to flesh it out some more in editing... there wasn't anything needing to be taken out, that i can recall...

the first draft of my novel was over 30 pages. But after I rewrote I managed to cut it down to just a little over 20 pages.

    That's not a novel. That's a short story.
