How many red herrings is too many?

    Nope, not sarcasm. I seriously can't think of an example of using a red herring outside of a crime story.

    I mean, in a romance, it would be the alternate lover we root for during part of the story who ends up not being the lover in the end. In horror, it would be the monster the heroes run from for most of the story that turns out not to be the monster. See what I mean?

    It is a plot device, but it's always personified as an actual character or object.
