    How many words per day?

Discussion in 'General Writing' started by Jethelin, Dec 1, 2011.

how many words(or pages) do you all generally try and write per day? Just curious.

I normally try and make 1000 on days that I work. On my days off I can easily get 1000, plus plenty more depending on my plans for the day that don't involve writing. If you do not have a set goal/ normal amount, how much time do you spend writing a day? I am curious about how much time I spend compared to other people ;)

I write when I'm inspired to write - some days I'll write 5 words and some days I'll write 5000. My original aim was to write 3000 words per week (and finish my novel, including editing, in one year), but that hasn't happened. I've been writing since February and I've done 55k, so I've travelling at about 1200 per week.

Wow, that makes me realise I really need to pull my finger out! 1200 words per week is a poor effort!!

Heh, yea some days all I get is notes written, not actual words in my story. Depends with me also. Some days I get lost in writing, while others I get lost in...whatever seems to be able to hold my attention besides writing :D. Or I'm just too tired or something. Coffee helps.

I write every day but i don't have a word goal or even page goal, usually I think its between 800-2000 though. Only occasionally I take a day off from writing. (when my words "finish" and I have to rest) :)

I don't word count in my writing.
My target is to write a story not to reach a number otherwise writing will start to look like a 9 to 5 job/routine which I definetely do not want.
Iwrite when I am inspired. I don't,can't and won't write under presssure.

Sometimes I can knockout around 2500 words, but that's when I write all day and really feel the power.:p But there are days I don't write at all, and some where I write 200 words. Ultimately I never write over 3000 words a day even though it feels as if I wrote so much more.

I say anywhere in between 500-1500 words is good.

Same here, as soon as i force myself I just can't do it. I believe that when I'm pressured to write nothing good can come out.

The words need to follow the flow of my book, mind and hands. It just has to be right there in the zone and as soon as that happens you gotta bring up some effort to stop me.

I write anywhere from 100-10,000+ everyday.

It all depends on what I have to say on that particular day. But with that said I do not set goals for myself in terms of word count. I think that is counterproductive. I write when I have a driving need to get it down on paper; I let the process come naturally because I feel I write the best that way. And like I said sometimes that is a hundred words and other times it could be upwards of ten thousand. I think you should be worried more about the quality and not the quantity.

I write no less than 3k words a day. I aim for 6k, and on weekends I will try for at least 10k.

At the moment, I'm working a horrible factory job from 4am-9am, so I go to that, come home, sleep until noon, write until about 6 or 7, then read until bedtime. :)

I don't think there are days when I'm uninspired. There are days where inspiration doesn't come easily because I'm tired, or hungry, or there's something else I want to do. But once I start writing, the words come naturally.

Editing, however, is another matter entirely. -_-

^ Yeah, editing can be tedious. But by that stage, I just wanna get the damn thing finished. Gotta be done.

As for writing, well I haven't written anything for a while. I don't have a schedule at all at the moment.

    I average 50/Minute.
With 30-60 minutes average typing a day about 1500-3000 words a day.
On weekends I get alot more free time and tend to write more though. ;)

I understand this completely. I usually find my self struggling to write a single sentence due to tiredness or lack of focus. but usually once I get started I find myself unable to stop.

WOW, how many hours does it take to write 10K??? for me it would probably be like a weeks worth of words...

I agree, but I also like it a lot and that is the time when I recharge the creativity, after all that writing, draft after draft, it's nice to do another kind of work for a while.

i really only write when I'm in school. On the days that I'm bored in class I normally write around 2000 words. Then I edit which lowers it to around 1400.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong, I don't hate editing or anything. It's just harder work than actually writing. And I've never thought to myself, "Damn, this is fun. I wish I never had to stop editing this scene."

It all depends on how inspired I am. If I am on a creative roll I can have the 10k written in 6-8 hours. But if I am staring at the screen blankly it can take 2-3 days. Needless to say I cant write 10k everyday, but it happens pretty regularly.

Oh well, I'm a little odd on score count. I'm like the "mother of all" writing. I set myslef a goal and usually try to follow it. But when I don't, I punish myself. For instance I set a goal to write and edit, 3 chapters one day, knowing, I had nothing on all day. It should be easy, right? Wrong! I procrastinated and messed up, leaving myself 2 chapters; day/goal behind. So I punished myself. You'll never believe the punishment. Aside from writing weird fiction tales, I also write poetry. So I force myself to write one poem as punishment. Needless to day, I have a lot of poems now. Ha ha. :)

I use either word count or time (depends on the necessities that take up the rest of that day - like the paying job :p). But I write every day, whether it's a half hour/150 words or several hours/full chapter. I don't think waiting on 'the mood' or for inspiration is that productive (there's got to be some discipline involved), but that's JMHO. :)

completely agree, besides, I find the inspiration often strikes after you've been writing for a while...

I completely agree. As they say its quality not quantity.
