I'm curious to see your thoughts and opinions on the topic. Psychic powers, for me is someone like ninten/ness/Lucas from the Mother series of Nintendo games. Magic, on the other hand, I find to be Dumbledore/Gandalf type of magic. Thoughts?
My opinion: Psychic are powers that are usually innate, usually mental, and silent in operation: Telepathy, Telekinetic, Mind Control, etc. I also, think psychic powers cannot be learned.. Magic can be learned through rituals, can be invoked via chants or objects. Magic is a much broader term that covers anything from spells to fireballs.
What about the development of psychic powers? I mean, as you grow older you develop more/more powerful psychic abilities. Example: Born: none/almost nonexistent Age 5: Move things slightly without meaning too Etc. Or are you thinking differently? Interesting. If you would be so kind, would you explain your train of thought?
Sure, I think the seed for that power was innate though, meaning one can't learn it. But with practice it can be enhanced.
What do you mean? One knows all the psychic techniques he/she will ever know at birth? If this comes off as challenging or rude, I don't mean it that way.
Not rude. I think, for example: If someone learns that they are telekinetic at age 7 because a bully was picking on them in the schoolyard, then the 'seed' for telekinesis was always with the child (from birth). Whereas, at age 32, I could learn magical spells.
Sure, I think the word magic is broad enough to cover any kind of supernatural or paranormal power, and I think being psychic falls into that category.
Ah. So you mean they always have the power, but just realize it after certain events in their life? Ah. I see. Interesting. I can see now why you think that.
That, or they could know immediately without some external catalyst. My point is the 'seed' for whichever power (or powers) is innate, it has always been with them. How they learn about it is up to you as the author. I was trying to distinguish between psychic ability and magic.
1 sec, I want to get a video/gif/image to clarify. This is from a game called earthbound (aka mother 2) and the character in the cradle is ness (default name). Is this kind of what you are geting at? Edit: Wow. That image wasn't that big on mobile.
If the assumption is that psychic powers are something that humans can grow into by evolution/mutation, then it does not equate to magic, which is by definition something outside of the ability of science to ever explain. That is unless you choose to view magic as simply extremely advance science, in which case there really is no "magic".
Hi, For me they're the same thing. If you're writing sci fi hey presto it's psychic abilities. If you're writing fantasy it's magic. Cheers, Greg.
Just out of curiosity, would the main characters of Dragonball Z be considered to have psychic/magical abilities? They can fly and shoot what amounts to energy beams out of their hands. Granted it's explained in a different way, but it's still fundamentally the same thing, no?
If the debate is about real world witches and psychics, I'd say psychics are born, witches can be taught. Witches really just learn spells and how to make potions. Anyone can do that. If it works, I can't say. I've tried, and nothing I've done has ever made a difference. lol Psychics on the other hand are often born that way. Children are said to be highly intuitive because they are pure and open to new experiences. It's only as we get older that we lose the ability, because our daily stresses and the fear of being "weird" stand in the way. But it's possible to open them back up through practice. If we're talking about in books and movies, I'd say psychic abilities are strictly mental and magical abilities are more physical. Being able to throw a fire ball would be magical. Being able to predict the future or bend a spoon with your mind would be psychic.
If you're talking about the real world, I'd say both are imaginary. In fiction, I'd agree that one major difference is that magic can be learned, and ESP is innate.
Remember that one time you accused Ginger of belittling people? Well, there you go being hypocritical again..
No idea what you're talking about. @Reilly Turner didn't make it clear whether he/she was asking about the difference between psychic powers and magic in fiction or real life. I wasn't the only one who responded by making that distinction. I don't see where my belief that magic and ESP don't really exist 'belittles' anyone. Aren't we allowed to hold different opinions here? You owe me an apology, but let's not further hijack yet another thread with a petty personality conflict.
