Can I start a short story in a dream?

Discussion in 'Plot Development' started by Megan Sutherland, Oct 27, 2012.

I've been thinking about starting my story in a nightmare, in a way giving the reader a background on what has happened up to this point. I'm not sure if it's too predictable and cliche though. Any advice will be greatly appreciated:).

It's still an infodump. Don't do it.

    ditto that!

starting fiction with a dream is so much a beginning-writer cliche that it should really be avoided until you have a reputation that allows you to write a grocery list and have it be a bestseller...

I'm a beginner and I started a manuscript with a dream. It isn't much of an info dump as it is a "what the hell was that?" Which will inevitably be explained as the story develops.

Should I also avoid that beginning the story dream usage, or should I edit it out and rewrite when I go back over the manuscript?
