I asked my Hindi-speaking husband but he said "What the hell is a land of water?" and I said "Um... yeah, I don't know."

Do you just want a literal translation of the words "land", "of" and "water?"

Because the concept doesn't make sense. To me and Mr Tenderiser, anyway.

Be VERY careful with Google translate. Check results against a proficient speaker

Oh no no. I should've been clearer. Well, I do use Google Translate, but after I do, I always double triple quadruple check. IE- I check with other sources to be sure.

What source would you check with, besides a native speaker?

Not a native speaker, but in Arabic land is "ard" and water is "maa'". So, "Ard al-Maa'" might be something close.

Assuming you meant fresh, drinkable water.

But I agree with @Tenderiser 's Hindi-speaking friend that it sounds a little wierd. If we had some more context it might help? Like is it a land with a lot of rainfall, or a lot of lakes? Or a swamp? Unfortunately there's no such thing as a simple translation...

I think he meant something along the lines of a place known for being full of water. Like, a "Country of Water" or where it is a defining trait. Like in the Naruto manga series where a country is called "Land of Water" because is in the middle of the ocean.

Now I'm not a speaker myself but I asked a friend of Bahrain and he gave me this translation.

    اﻷرض المائيه

It roughly translates to "Land and Water". Now I decided to Google the untranslated term and it got me this video.

I have no idea what people are talking there but I found interesting the term lead to a video called "Water Land".

Personally I would suggest you search how something like "oasis" or similar terms translate to Arab, since they can evocate the image of a place with water amidst land.

But it would help If you was more specific. I can think a lot of different meanings for "Land of Water" from something like the Earthsea on the LeGuin novels, an oasis, a country full of rivers, even a Paradise after death If your novel takes place in a dry and harsh desert.

Other translators, mostly, online dictionaries if I can find one. They can't all be wrong, right?

Yes, especially if they're giving a literal translation when you want a concept.

So... I shouldn't ask, how do you translate "You can't swing a cat without hitting one of them."
