    Words With Two Meanings

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by Cacian, Dec 18, 2011.

I always run into words that means two things and I am wondering wether I shoud just skip the words and use a different ones all together in case I confuse my reader.

I am trying to write this:

It was boxing days he remembered best.

what is your FIRST understanding of this sentence?

Most words have multiple meanings. In these situations, it's best to clarify with surrounding context (i.e., talk about what makes him remember the days he stuffs things into boxes the best, or about the fighters he often got ringside tickets to go see, etc.).

    I agree.
In other words I cannot have a boxer as my main character in a middle of christmas because it does confuse the reader.
So I am thinking some words are limiting in terms of what I can say/write or do.
In other words a words with two meanings are limiting in terms of ideas.

Boxing as a sport does not allow blows to the head right?

Why couldn't you? What does an actual fisticuffs boxer do during Christmas, cease to exist? A boxer can enjoy boxing presents with boxes. You just have to support the term 'boxer' with context.

No, only below the waist shots and foot stomping.

I do....haha.... I am the spectator who tried to watch for about a second then decided it was too painful.
But I did remember seeing boxers wearing helmets around their heads.
I am suprised they are allowed to go for the head.

the holiday 'Boxing Day' would be capitalized... if you write it without the capitals, it refers to fisticuffs, 'the manly art'...

That is a valid point but you would not be able to emphasise capitals when you are talking.

Why not? You don't adhere to any of the other rules of man, or the universe, for that matter. one could make "Captial speka" by stamping one's stilettoes at the appropriate time.

If you make your own rules, then it shouldn't matter.

Agreed but let's put it this way a language should be geared towards ensuring that the writer does not make mistakes.
The way I see if there are mistakes made it is because the language is not right.
It is all down to logic.
if something is made right then the rest should run smoothely.
A bit like saying well the computer is down.
The reason the computer crashes it is because the way it is set is not right.
It is not the user who makes it crash itis the way it is set that does.
    The same with language.
Set it right and everyone elese will see it right is my motto.

No I have not and I would not want to.
I can just look at it and I know there are so many things wrong about it.

Haha, Prophetsnake, I feel as if I am seeing a small glimmer of your past meow skills. It is very enjoyable to behold. I have not laughed this much over internet posts in quite some time.
