Word for sarcastic quick breath

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by Ben414, Aug 12, 2013.

I can't think of the name for it (if there is one). The action is when someone breathes in quickly as a sarcastic response. It has a similar meaning as a "Tch" sound. Is there a word for it or can anyone think of an apt description for it? I'm new to this community, and I appreciate the help!

I know exactly what you mean. I've had this problem before.

Maybe "scoff," or, "quick scoff," "nervous scoff," etc., to convey a more specific nuance.

I always write it onomatopoeic-wise as "Pff-whatever" and you can add an eye-roll. :)

i can't figure out what you mean by 'breathing in quickly'... that doesn't seem to relate to being sarcastic in any way i can imagine... the most common immediate response to something we don't believe is a 'quick breathing out'... which results in a 'huh!' sort of sound... often with the hint of a 't' sound at the start...

but you don't have to use a single specific word, in order to let the readers know your character is reacting sarcastically... do it in body language and dialog, instead...

Thanks for the responses. Scoff appears to be the best fit, but perhaps the occasional onomatopoeic will work as well. mammamaia You're right, I meant quick breath out.
