Hello everyone, Just joined the forum and wanted to introduce my self. A little about me, I was born and grew up in America but currently live in Ireland. I do not consider my self a good writer which is why I joined the forums to hopefully get some advice and help on a project I am starting. So expect to see a lot of me here shortly. In fact, you may grow tired of seeing topics started by space_goose Anyway, good to be here and I look forward to learning from all of you.
Hello Space Goose, Welcome to the Writing Forums. Posting your own writing for people to comment on should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog. Also, be aware that posting a piece of writing on any public site, including this one, will greatly diminish your chances of selling it for publication. Removing the writing later does not alter that fact - once posted, it is irreversibly considered published. So do not post anything more than a small excerpt of any piece you are planning to submit for publication. If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate. As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). Thank you all for your kind welcome. I have been cruising these forums for a few weeks here before i joined. As I said earlier, I am not a writer. I have had the idea for a story floating around in my head for about 10 years now and a friend of mine has convinced me to try and write it down. I have not quit decided what I want to do with the story yet once it is finished but at this point I am not worried about that. I have already found and read several topics in these forums that I feel will help me but I still have a lot of other questions. Being that I am not a writer, I have been reading works of similar subject to mine to see if I can get a since of writing style. I have a degree from a major University in Astronomy and my story is Sci-Fi and takes place in the Future once man kind has left earth and has ventured to other star system and has colonized other planets. One big problem I have always had with work of science fiction is that they seem to always be more fiction than Science. Star Wars is a good example of this, it is a very good story but doesn't go along with science well at all. So at this point, I haven't written a word yet in my story. I am still doing research making sure that the science of all of my ideas could be possible. I have also tried making a few flow charts so that I could get my ideas going in a direction. I just know that you guys will be able to help me get going.
