    Humor Essay Formatting

Discussion in 'General Writing' started by Rumwriter, Feb 28, 2012.

For my class, I am writing a humor essay. We weren't given any guidlines, other than to look at the work of other humorists (David Sedaris, Nora Ephron, Steve Martin...), and then it will, of course, be critiqued in class.

I was thinking about writing my essay as a transcript. Very:

    Person A: blah blah blah
    Person B: hmm...yadda yadda
    [laughing]
Person A: But yakkity yakkity yak...

I know you aren't my professor, but would you say this is an acceptable way to write a humor article for a magazine? As long as it is something that would be considered an acceptable form for publication, I don't see her saying anything about me going too far out of the box.

    Thoughts?

in fact, I'm also now considering more of along the lines of e-mails being sent between multiple parties, so it isn't standard prose.

If it's not too late, I'd suggest that you ask her. While there's nothing inherently wrong with that format, I think that it exercises different skills from a conventional essay, so you may find that it's not acceptable to her for this specific assignment.
