I am Number Four: A SF series that is so close, but so far from being good

I'm wondering if any of you have read this series? Currently, four out of the six books are published. Written from a multi first person perspective, the plot and overall story is utterly fascinating. The problem, however, is that the author misses on the little things, and a few of the bigger things. The opening scene to book one is horribly written, and I wouldn't have continued it except that I had already seen the movie and was interested in the plot itself. There are places where the book soars, and places where it just misses.

Have any of you read the series? A book of the series? If so, what did you think?

I haven't read it, but when I heard about it, I thought; "This sounds EXACTLY like Cyborg 009".
