Help how do i describe this would rock jutting out of the sea work ? I have been happily calling it a stack but only one of my readers knows what one is so need to change it- I can't get past the fact it is called a stack lol I need to smack a bird into the side of it and it's important it isn't a cliff.

It looks like a slice was taken out of the nearby cliff.

Different layers of rocked are 'stacked' on top of one another to form that slice. :)

Sliced out piece of towering rock?

A cliff slice surrounded by water?

A sliced out piece of cliff eroded by the sea, forming a separated stack of rock?

    How about?

The bird sees his opportunity as he and his opponent move closer to a large column of rock, located further out to sea ? Awful lot of words to replace stack lol

Call it a stack, but give the description. Yay vocab building!

I would interpret stack as a pile of a number of discrete items, although I have heard about "chimney stack"

A giant rocky finger protruding from the sea ?

I think that's enough to paint the picture.

Sometimes we have to say more in order to say it right.

With the light, salty sea spray in the wind, the circling bird descends, diving ever lower, closing in upon his potential roost far below. Jutting up from the foamy water, is a monolithic column stone from the world's prehistoric past. A spire of volcanic refuse, left over from the formation of the coast line in the ancient past, which should serve well for the bird's needs. Spreading its wings wide, catching the wind and slowly gliding down to a soft, gentle landing, that none the less requires a flurry of wing flapping to maintain its balance, the bird finds its stable footing, planting its talons securely on the stone. With a knowing gaze of primal wisdom, the bird surveys its surroundings from its perch, high atop the giant stone pillar, looming high above the craggy cliffs and sandy beaches below.

Turning its head sideways to eye Elgaisma up and down with a suspicious glare, the bird screeches a demanding challenge.

A literal translation would be "Why is it called a stack anyway?"

Well, it's a ... stack! Perhaps you could post the sentence you have in mind so that we can better judge whether or not it's clear what is meant.

Otherwise I would describe it as a column of rock isolated by erosion.

The bird sees his opportunity as he and his oponent move closer to the stack out in the bay. Then pretty much as Lothgar described it :) I wish lol the bird is a peacock and his opponent a Great Skua so basically the peacock uses his body to smash the Great Skua into the rock.

It's a pillar of rock. What more do you want?

A jagged column of stone jutted up from the ocean shore like a rude gesture. A gull, startled by the screech of an overly territorial swift, veered into the sheer tower, and fell wounded into the surf.
