I'm looking for a couple of words by their meanings

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by Au79, Apr 29, 2015.

Hey there! I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask such a question, pardon me if it's not. :)
I'm looking for a couple of words which I need in order to expresss some specific meanings (English is not my native language).
    1. I need a word which means staring through a window while expecting someone ( I'm not sure if such a word exists :-D )
    2. Is it apropriate to use 'wreathed' if I want to say that something is covered with ice? If not, what other word an I use?

    Thank you!

    I'm not sure there's a single word for #1.

For #2, "wreathed" suggests something circular - like a wreath! Not necessarily a circle, maybe, but something linear at least? Like, if you said something was wreathed in ice, I'd expect maybe something that seemed like an overlapping band, or something? If you're looking for a smoother, less circular coating, maybe coated? covered? encased?

I also got that impression when I looked it up in a dictionary ( it's a word that I learned today actually :-D ) but I was wondering if other uses were possible. 'Coated' is perfect, thank you so much!

Anticipate means "expecting," so that may be able to work for #1. Your character stared out the window in anticipation.

Looking out of a window for someone? I think you would be expectant, eager, longing. You anticipate them

As for ice? I like to think of ice as force. Things don't get covered by it, it covers things. It dominates, surrounds and encapsulates.

You find a lot of great new words for things by changing your perpsective

    1. We have 'clock-watching' so why not 'window-watching'?
    2. Perhaps 'sheathed' in ice?

+1 to Woof's, "sheathed" - perhaps depending on the shape of the object encased or encrusted in ice.

No idea on the window staring through whilst waiting word.

Enveloped in ice? Swallowed by ice? Encrusted in ice? Just throwing some random words out there in hope they will help.
I also don't know about the window one, but agree that "anticipation" or "eagerness" could be the right direction.

Thank you all for your help! :) Especially to Woof - I liked the 'window-watching', I think it'll do the trick  As for the ice, I'll just pick one of the words you offered :p
    Thanks again! ^^
