    GENRE: animal fantasy

Discussion in 'Fantasy' started by ENJOY, Feb 20, 2011.

This genre isn't well read and there are not that many books in this genre but i love it. at the the moment in time I'm writing a book called the Circle Of Madagascar. But, the main reason i created thread is that i was wondering if any one could recommend a good book in this genre. Because i can't find many.

A lot of people seem to like the Redwall series. I tried reading it to my daughter when she was younger; neither one of us could get into it.

I love animal fiction and have read several good ones.

There's the Duncton Wood (about moles) books, The Wolves of Time and the Stonor Eagles by William Horwood, one of my favourite writers.

Bambi, by Felix Salten - Make sure you get the original and not the disney-fied version (very different - for a start Bambi's mother doesn't even die!).

House Of Tribes by Garry Kilworth, is about mice.

David Clement-Davies has various ones too.

Have you read any of those?

On a side note, I am writing an animal fiction novel myself :)

Watership Down by Richard Adams, about rabbits, is also one of the must read classics of the genre.

The Firebringer Trilogy by Meredith Ann Pierce was one of favorites as a child. About unicorns.

Watership Down by Richard Adams. Fantastic book, although I must say the animated film gave me nightmares as a child!!

Heh, David Clement-Davies wrote an animal fantasy book named Firebringer. It was about deer instead of unicorns, though.
