    Italics or single quotes for the idea of "so called"

    The Berlin International Amphitheater, dubbed by locals as 'the snail', was one-hundred feet high and shaped like a conch shell.

    The government could deny the existance of aliens, but they couldn't keep a lid on the 'rumors' of their existence.

    (in this case, rumors implying commonly known but unproven truth)

    in the us, single quotes are ONLY used for a quote within a quote... doubles are what you need to use for anything else...

    british rules may differ...
